Abrasive blasting on steel substrates is performed to clean and rid the surface of contaminants, and create an appropriate profile for adhesion. However have you given much thought beyond Salts/chlorides to what is left behind on the surface, perhaps not visible to the naked eye? I am talking about abrasive embedment, the usually small amount of the abrasive used in the blasting that is embedded in the profile after blasting. You can't see it, but it's there. So how does the chemical composition of the embedded abrasive affect the coating? Not many know the answer to this question. However there was a paper published at AMPP by our good friends at Sherwin Williams, who took a deep dive into this exact subject. It is not my paper to share, and it would be more than worth your while to read this report. It just might help you avoid coating failures down the road! Let me just say this after having read and digested this report. The embedded invisible abrasive left behind may have a huge impact on whether your coating lasts, or whether it fails prematurely.
