One of the best things about traveling for me is learning how different people live, work, and do life as a whole We’ve spent the last 25 days city-hopping in Europe, and it’s been a refreshing eye-opener. In the smaller towns, I especially found myself chatting with the locals about life, work, and everything in between. Many of these people were around ‘retirement age’, let’s call it, although I think that idea is quickly becoming redundant. And here’s what stood out to me: For many of these people, the big material goals just didn’t matter. They derived their happiness from other things, the simpler things in life. Also, they spent a lot of time doing things they genuinely liked doing – often for little to no gain apart from the joy of doing them. In the Dolomites, for instance, Sangeeta and I were greeted by our tour guide, Herbert. Herbert is 75-ish years old. Three times a week, he just shows up at this hotel and takes guests who want to go out for a 2800m elevation, 6-hour hike to catch the gorgeous views of the valley. Sangeeta and I signed up. We weren’t charged a penny. What does he get out of it? Joy, it turns out. And a good bit of movement a few times a week.  The best part? Herbert’s not the exception. We met others like him. People who worked for joy. People who said, ‘Retire and do what?’ when I asked them if they considered retiring soon. It got me thinking about what really matters ‘in the end.’ Most of us will probably not say ‘I regret I didn’t buy my dream car.’ We’ll regret the more fundamental trains we missed in life: The joy train. The well-being train. The family and friends train. Are you letting those pass you by, as you wait for the bullet train that is going to speed you off to your multi-million-dollar goals? Chase those goals. But don’t forget there are other things that matter just as much, if not more, along the way. #reflection #downtime #itsnotbusinessitspersonal
