Introducing our 2024 Homelessness Prevention Strategy: The overwhelming cost of housing in the Portland region leaves too many people with little choice but to camp outside, double up in cramped apartments, or take other drastic measures. In response to the persisting homelessness crisis, Impact NW has created an updated 2024 Homelessness Prevention Strategy. This document explains the key factors amplifying housing insecurity and homelessness in Portland and communicates Impact NW’s role in addressing this humanitarian crisis through suggested near and long term solutions. Did you know that last FY, 52% of our work was specifically directed towards helping people access, set up, and maintain safe, secure homes? Ending homelessness takes more than just housing (that's why we have 6 impact pillars!) but it's an important part of the picture. Our 'housing' pillar represents how we help to prevent and end homelessness through #housingfirst, legal aid, tenancy support, and housing set up. Right now, we're in the midst of our End of Year Appeal which is solely focused on helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, those with pets, and young people move towards safe homes. The hub is not just a place of refuge; it's a vibrant community where personal stories intersect, creating a tapestry rich with complexity and camaraderie. It's clear that overcoming homelessness requires more than just food and shelter—it needs understanding, advocacy, and systemic change. As professionals committed to social impact, we have the power to influence and advocate for policies that provide meaningful support to the homeless. With the frigid temperatures over this week, Boston's homelessness crisis becomes a life or death scenario. In Massachusetts, needless NIMBY litigation continues to stall, delay, or ultimately kill housing development. Such litigation restricts housing supply, or raises housing costs that get passed along to the consumer (if projects ever get built). While the legislature made great strides in amending Section 17 of the Zoning Act (G.L. c. 40A) over the summer, it will take months, and perhaps years, to see the anticipated chilling of such baseless litigation. In the meantime, it is imperative that we in the local real estate industry support those in need of housing through local organizations like St. Francis House. On February 9th, St. Francis House will be holding its annual Winter Walk on the Boston Common, to raise funds for SFH and other organizations working to end homelessness in Boston.
