For decades, firms have struggled with managing and processing overwhelming volumes of documents. A new case study from Wharton experts in Harvard Business Review analyzes how one such firm – a large U.S. healthcare insurer – leveraged AI to tackle this problem: https://whr.tn/3WcH9EW Prof. Peter Cappelli, Director of the Center for Human Resources, and Valery Yakubovich, Executive Director of the Mack Institute for Innovation Management, worked with co-authors from Ricoh USA, Inc. Braj Thakur, MBA and Ashok Shenoy to examined how the insurer used AI to organize and extract information from documents as a first step in the reimbursement process. (AI was not used to make decisions on whether to approve or deny claims.) Their study offers five lessons for firms exploring AI integration to improve operational efficiency: - Cost-effectiveness is more important than automation - Adopting AI doesn't necessarily mean reducing headcount - Collaboration between tech experts and frontline workers is essential to successful implementation - AI can free up time for employees to focus on higher-value work - Cost savings come from increases in scale made possible by higher productivity and quality
