On Tuesday during our production meeting I asked our team “do you think guys in the Alabama football locker room or the Michigan locker room just sit around and pat each other on the backs all day?” “Or do you think they hold each other to higher standard and push each other to get better?” The same thing exists in business, it’s the players job to hold the standard of execution, of attitude, of expectations from each other. It’s our job as leaders to help define it, help find people that want be a part of it, put people in the right positions, and then help encourage everyone to hold the line themselves. Great teams are not full of YES men and YES women, they are chalk full of ACCOUNTABLE men and women. So yeah, we get after each other a little bit more than maybe your average company, but it’s in the name of accountability and the desire to be great… not just as individuals but as a great team of great individuals. I’ve shared a few business lessons via fishing, but today I’m gonna share a fishing lesson via business. As many of yall know my son Hayes fishes competitively on the Junior Circuit. He’s had some great success there and grown much since he started back in 3rd grade. Wins, losses, and even some bad losses. Learning much each time win or lose. Over the last 20 years at #Mckesson I’ve found that the best results often come from assembling the talent, painting the objective, and then stepping back so the team can create their own solutions. This year I took that approach with this fishing team. The objective is to return to the national championship. The plan however is now completely up to them. They talk all week, devise their strategy, and then Friday night inform me where I need to take them. The results so far? Stop 1- 🏆First Place Stop 2- 🏆Second Place They’re rolling. Don’t feel like you need to be the boss just to be the boss. Often times your greatest contribution as a leader is assembling the right team and then getting out of the way. *all fish safely released.

Interviewer: What would be your advice for anybody who comes in as the next head coach? Pete: "You want me to tell the guy how to win? It wouldn’t matter if it was football or not. To me, the essence of being as good as you can be is you have to figure out who you are.  You have to figure that out in relentless effort and get clear on what’s important to you; what uncompromising principles you stand by; what makes you who you are. If you don’t go through that process….you don’t do the self-discovery; then you don’t have an opportunity to be your best because you don’t know who you are yet. For anybody, you have to understand what kind of player you are; you have to understand what kind of coach you are; what kind of dad you are…all the way down the line to maximize your authenticity and be connected to the true essence of who you are. Without that, you’re gonna be sometimes and sometimes…that’s why you know people don’t (win). It’s hard to be consistently successful cuz people don’t even know HOW they got there a lot of times. It just happens kind of along the way, the circumstances come together and all…you know… So that’s to me, the essence of it. That’s how I understand it." In last night's NASCAR race, Martin Truex Jr. (MTJ) was hit with a speeding penalty on pit road, sending him to the back of the field. As a playoff contender, this nearly guaranteed he'd be knocked out. MTJ apologized to the Team over the radio. Rather than dwell on the mistake or place blame, the crew chief encouraged the Team to push hard and work through it.
