For many older adults, going home after a hospital or rehabilitation stay is a big milestone. It can be not only physically demanding but mentally exhausting, too. This can be especially so when the recovery takes time and you don’t feel as independent as you once were. But with the proper planning and preparation, you can ensure a smooth recovery process and reduce the time it takes to feel like yourself again. What kind of help will you need, if any? Will you be able to climb stairs, or will you need to change how your home is laid out? And what about transportation to follow-up appointments? These are just some of the things to address ahead of time so you have the support and assistance for a comfortable and safe recovery at home. Ideally, you should consider these questions before you go into the hospital or rehab center. To learn some tips for questions to consider asking and things you might want to prepare for, Right at Home of Central New Jersey encourages you to click on the link below. #rightathomeofcnj #rahcnj #goinghome https://lnkd.in/gi_dyx6D

From the The New York Times article by Paula Span: "Putting a spouse or partner in a long-term care facility, for any reason, represents a fraught transition for a couple, one that can mean release from the sometimes crushing burden of caregiving, but can also be accompanied by lingering depression, anxiety and guilt, studies have shown." #NYTimes #Caregivers #CaregiverSupport #PatientCare #HomeBasedCare #AssistedLiving #NursingHome #MemoryCare #Alzheimers #Dementia #Hospice

🧐 Throughout the course of caregiving, family caregivers of older adults with severe dementia often face high caregiving burden and anticipatory grief. What is the significance of this? 🖥️ This study which involved a total of 215 family caregivers of older adults with severe dementia in Singapore, used the Caregiver Reaction Assessment scale and the Marwit Meuser Caregiver Grief Inventory-Short Form to measure caregivers’ burden and anticipatory grief. 🗓️ Over the course of 3 years, these caregivers were surveyed every 4 months. It was found that higher caregiving burden and anticipatory grief of the caregivers increased the likelihood of older adults having acute healthcare use. 🌟 This study reveals how addressing caregivers' well-being, by reducing subjective caregiving burden and managing anticipatory grief, has implications for reducing both acute healthcare use in older adults, and the economic burden of severe dementia. 👥 Authors: Chetna Malhotra, Isha Chaudhry, Shimoni Shah, and PISCES study group. 📖 Journal: JAMDA Journal 🔗 Refer to the link in the comments for more information! #CaregivingBurden #AnticipatoryGrief #FamilyCaregivers #HealthcareResearch #DementiaSupport #CaregiverWellbeing #MentalHealth #HealthcareCosts #PalliativeCareResearch #LienCentreforPalliativeCare #DukeNUS

At TheKey, we believe that striving to understand aging adults is an important part of providing them with quality care. Here are 4 tips caregivers everywhere can use to better care for older adults with dementia: 1. Create reminders for helping those who must take medications regularly 2. When dressing or bathing, allow the person to do as much as possible 3. Be gentle and respectful at all times, especially during transitions 4. Serve meals in a familiar place at the same time each day and give the person enough time to eat Have you tried any of these tips in your caregiving experience? Do you have any more advice to add? Thank you to Heather Frost and the team at Azalea Gardens Memory Care Community for your dedication to creating a compassionate and supportive environment for seniors in the Tallahassee area. I’m grateful for the opportunity to support your families by providing safe spaces where caregivers can learn to cope with the heavy burden of guilt, share their struggles, laugh, cry, and—most importantly—realize they are not alone. As many of us know, the journey of caregiving doesn't end when you move your loved one into a care community. It's often just the beginning of a new chapter filled with challenges. Leaders who truly understand this know how draining it is for adult children to make these difficult decisions. By the time we’ve navigated the exhausting process of realizing our parents can no longer live at home, we’re already worn down. And it’s not just the internal battles—like convincing yourself and your parent that moving is the right decision—but also the external pressures from family who may not fully understand the weight you’re carrying. And once the decision is made, there are unexpected calls, hospitalizations, rehab stays, and the constant uncertainty of what’s next. When a nursing home becomes necessary, many of us feel a renewed sense of guilt. Guilt that we aren’t there enough, guilt that our parent’s condition might have worsened because we weren’t visiting often enough. These feelings never fully go away, and we find ourselves questioning every step. Leaders in long-term care must empathize with how different this stage of caregiving is. It’s mentally and emotionally draining, especially with the complexities of managing care plans, medications, misdiagnoses, and increased hospitalizations. Statistics show that 38% of the 1.9 million nursing home residents are hospitalized annually, compared to just 12% in assisted living—that’s nearly 500,000 families impacted. Are you part of that 38%? Click here: https://lnkd.in/eyHks-qP for your free PDF for Coping Strategies For Caregiver Guilt. #tallahassee

The first step in caring for a loved one with a Congenital Heart Defect is to know what the term means. According to the CDC, "Congenital heart defects are present at birth and can affect the structure of a person’s heart and its ability to work properly. As medical care and treatment have advanced, people with heart defects are living longer and healthier lives, many into adulthood." So how can a family or professional caregiver help? 1) Educate yourself about the exact problem and any medications that need to be taken. 2) Make sure medications are consumed and observe any possible side effects. 3) Help by serving healthy meals and sharing moderate exercise routines (approved by their doctor). 4) Be watchful for any signs that the condition is getting worse. 5) Ensure that they don't skip doctor visits.
