Proud to be a University of South Carolina Gamecock! There are lots of reasons to have Gamecock pride, but today my pride focuses of access and affordability of higher education for South Carolina high school graduates. Starting with admissions for the fall 2024 semester, USC will admit all students in the top 10 percent of their class at South Carolina high schools. Admissions = access. But as President Amiridis wrote, “…access without affordability is sometimes meaningless.” So in addition to access/admission, the USC Commitment will cover costs of tuition and academic fees for South Carolina students who are in the top 10% of their graduating class and whose family income is less than $80,000. Accesss and affordability… that’s how change, how difference is made. Go Gamecocks!

Advocis, stop complaining about your critics, who, BTW, are entirely valid in their criticism, and get you to act together or, better yet do us all a favour and fold. One more thing: Treat your members with the simple respect of being transparent. Case in point: Instead of hand waving away the questions about these cash-value life insurance policies that you for some reason own, by simply saying, "they are old and have performed well," maybe use it as an opportunity to be transparent and answer the obvious questions: - Whose lives are they on? - Why were they sold in the first place? - Who got paid the commissions for these? If this is innocent, you should have no issue disclosing this information. If something not above board happened here, come clean. Either way, cursory dismissals are not the way to treat your members.

The State Charter Schools Commission (SCSC) has approved five new charter schools set to open in Fall 2025, including Columbus/Muscogee County’s first start-up and only charter school, Dominion Purpose Academy (DPA). Columbus, Georgia’s 3rd largest city by population, has long awaited this addition, as other major cities outside Atlanta like Augusta, Savannah, and Macon have had multiple charter schools serving their communities for years. DPA will not only be the first start-up charter school in Columbus, but also the only charter school within an hour's drive of the city. We are excited to see DPA offer a much-needed PUBLIC education option for families in Columbus. While the city continues to thrive with industry and opportunity, it is also home to two of Georgia’s most impoverished zip codes. The three elementary schools closest to DPA’s proposed location have 87% of their combined students scoring below grade proficiency levels in ELA, Math, and Science. One of these schools has only 5% of students reading at grade level proficiency. Now, these families will have a choice, and we are confident that DPA will be a game changer by providing access to a high-quality, innovative charter school. With over 14,000 students on wait lists for charter schools all over Georgia, bringing one to a very large community that lacks options- like Columbus- is a significant win for students and families. Did you know Rodeo Austin has a Scholarship Program? Last year they raised 3.3 Million Dollars. There goal is to reach 3.5 Million Dollars this year. THE SELECTION PROCESS: Rodeo Austin partners with select colleges, universities and educational organizations in Texas. Each entity is granted scholarships to award; they then review applicants and choose those who meet requirements set by Rodeo Austin. THE QUALIFICATIONS: The foremost element determining selection is financial need. Most of the students come from households with incomes less than $75,000 per year. In fact, without a scholarship college is just a dream for many students. Rodeo Austin Scholars must also be standout students academically. Ranked in the top of the high school class and A average students, recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA while in college to continue receiving funds. Finally, the applicants must display community involvement. National Honor Society, band, theater, 4-H or FFA, and service organizations are just a few of the activities scholars have historically participated in.
