July is Disability Pride Month. Here's my unpopular opinion. I totally get why posting about disability without making your content accessible seems like you're saying one thing and then doing another. But how do you make room for more voices if you keep expecting perfection and then cutting people down if their content doesn't measure up? We need more voices, not less. People have important thoughts to share about accessibility and about advocating for human rights. It bothers me to think that some people will choose to not be part of that conversation because they are afraid that they will be judged harshly. Did you know that July is Disability Pride Month? It's an opportunity to raise awareness of disabilities, start positive conversations and celebrate the diversity and differences of our disabled communities. No matter what the month means to individuals, the main focus is to be proud of being disabled and for people to be unapologetically themselves. So how can you step up as allies this month and beyond? ⚫️ Advocate for flexible work policies 🟤 Support disabled owned businesses ⚪️ Get involved in your Disability ERG ⚫️ Sponsor disabled future leaders 🟤 Review policies and language for ableist standards ⚪️ Remove ableist hiring practices But most importantly, ask your disabled friends, colleagues, and communities how you can best support them in the ways they need. “When the clock strikes midnight tonight, it will be #DisabilityPrideMonth. There will be no flashy merchandise. Companies won’t change their logos, if they even know how our pride flag looks like, and celebrities won’t be talking about it. And disabled people will still be fighting for equity and equality.” Disability Pride Month. A time to recognize and honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of people living with disabilities. It’s a call to educate ourselves and others about the systemic barriers and biases that persist, hindering true inclusivity and equal opportunities. Despite the lack of widespread recognition, we continue to advocate tirelessly for our rights, striving for a world where accessibility, understanding, and respect are universal.
