As a resident of San Francisco and a mother, I feel it's essential to address the issues that our city is facing. The divide between natives and "transplants" was something I had to come to terms with. This and other ideas contribute to classism, racism, and violence. We can't turn a blind eye to the hardships faced by our communities. While San Francisco's natural beauty and art scene are undeniable, we need to acknowledge the reality of the situation at home. It's time to work together to create a truly safe, inclusive, and welcoming city for all. One of the biggest challenges we face is the failing public safety and law enforcement systems. There is a culture of tolerance but perhaps that tolerance is being abused. Some people believe investing in entertainment will resolve problems. To create change, we must listen to victims, believe survivors, and hold abusers accountable. Personal responsibility isn't the answer for struggling single mothers or victims of crime. Lax consequences and looser social norms may not cure it either. We must continue to speak up and keep the conversation going. This starts with families and children. Every one of us deserves a life of dignity, freedom, and truth. Let us come together as a community to address these challenges and create a better future for San Francisco. Perpetuating negative or biased narratives against anyone is a sign that we still have work to do. Not everyone should fall in line with a status quo or the majority. It’s ok to be different and to know that those differences are subjective and nuanced. We cannot forget our past if we are to build a better future. Pretending like issues don’t exist anymore will cause missteps and build public distrust. Poverty, gender, race, and class discrimination exist. We must not deny reality. Parents have the right to raise their children without government intervention or surveillance regardless of cash, class, or creed. People who are victims of violence are not bad people or parents. Intimate relationships, romantic or otherwise, have the potential to be abusive, and the common tactic used by abusers and abusive systems is to isolate, blame and gaslight. Let us acknowledge a rise in misogynistic values and behavior and work together to create a safer environment for everyone. To all of the mothers and children being harmed; Remember, you are not alone. You are entitled to safety, and your children deserve the stability of a loving mother. Family health is public health, and the systems at play do not have the right to dismantle, scrutinize, and lord over your life or the lives of your children. Let's work together to create a better future for San Francisco. It starts in the family and the solution will be within families as well. Let’s demand more from those claiming to help the marginalized, disadvantaged, or vulnerable. Let’s make San Francisco a safe place for all not some.
