It has only been a few years since Juneteenth officially became a United States National Holiday, so some companies may still be deciding how they can best integrate and celebrate this national holiday throughout their companies. Here are some ideas to help get you started: 1. Volunteer as a company at a local event 2. Sponsor a Juneteenth event in your community 3. Expand your company's DEI efforts 4. Invite a civil rights or racial justice professional speaker to come and talk to your organization Happy Juneteenth everyone! The original concept for this post, and some of the ideas were taken from this article: https://lnkd.in/gC5vYHkm.

What became known as Bloody Sunday occurred #OnThisDay in 1965 in Selma, Alabama. The march was named for the 600 marchers who were attacked while crossing Edmund Pettus bridge. Law enforcement officers attacked unarmed marchers with Billy clubs and sprayed tear gas. Activist Amelia Boynton Robinson was brutally beaten by Alabama state troopers during the march. This photo drew national attention to the cause of civil rights and captured the brutality of the African American voting rights struggle. Robinson was a leading organizer of the march, working directly with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). Robinson had a history of activism, co-founding the Dallas County Voters League in 1933, and held African American voter registration drives in Selma from the 1930s-1950s. Later that year, the Voting Rights Act passed, a landmark federal achievement of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Terrific to join justice champions at the 2024 Equal Justice Conference to learn more about seminal efforts that give everyone a fair shot at wellbeing. Center for Heirs' Property Preservation in South Carolina builds on assets and addresses policies and practices that undermine people’s ability to accumulate wealth. CHPP helps people keep intergenerational wealth when a family member dies without a will by providing direct legal assistance to clear title to property, mediating family interests, and support with the court process. According to a 2022 Consumer Reports survey, 77% of Black and 82% of Hispanic Americans lack a will, compared to 61% of White Americans.

Washington State currently holds the unfortunate distinction of being the nation's leader in hate crimes. This alarming reality demands immediate action, and The Black Sanctuary is rising to the challenge. On Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 6:30 PM, please join The Black Sanctuary and the Seattle Chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) for a vital event focused on driving awareness and initiating real change in the civil rights movement of today. This event will feature presentations by the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the United States Attorneys' Offices. Drawing on her lifetime of social justice activism, Fania Davis depicts the essence of Restorative Justice, an emerging approach that seeks to move us from an ethic of separation, domination and extreme individualism to one of collaboration, partnership and interrelatedness. Rooted in Indigenous views of justice and healing, this rapidly expanding global movement invites us to make a radical shift from either-or, right-wrong, and us-versus-them ways of thinking. https://buff.ly/3ujtFwm

This story is such a disappointing example of how so many of the public statements promoting systemic change, and efforts claiming to focus on diversity and inclusion have largely been ineffective lip service, achieving only the illusion of movement. This is not to take away from some of the incredibly important work being done by those promoting diversity and inclusion, but to bring attention to the fact that superficial efforts do not bring about any real change. There need to be sustained efforts focusing on the systemic racism and systematic exclusion deeply embedded in our communities and what needs to happen to effect true change. While the names of streets, schools, and other institutions in our communities are symptoms of profound underlying problems, the emotional impact and power of memorials and monuments that honor people, places, and events cannot be underestimated. These kinds of civic choices speak volumes about who and what we value within our communities. In order for change to be sustainable, it must first be sincere. In order to reach that deeper place allowing for meaningful movement, we must find a way to acknowledge the fear and anxieties created by changing the familiar. Especially as we approach another contentious election, we need to be open to recognizing the nuance inherent in difficult issues and the value of empathy in our conversations and actions. This is how we will bring others along with us and achieve significant lasting change. #monuments #memorials #civicgovernment #administrativelaw #artlaw #artlawlawyer #systemicchange https://lnkd.in/gqtgevqu

Black women face eviction at twice the rate of white tenants due to decades of systemic housing inequity. This leaves people of color and low-income women most vulnerable to housing instability. At WREN, we’ve been advocating for economic justice for nearly a decade. But families at risk of eviction need support now. We’re collaborating with partners to advocate for tenants’ right to legal counsel in eviction cases. In South Carolina, renters facing eviction rarely get legal advice to navigate the complex legal system. With a right to counsel, families would have an attorney to defend their housing rights in court, which would help more people stay in their homes. Everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home. Join us in urging lawmakers to support tenants’ right to legal representation during evictions. With your help, we can promote housing justice for all. Take action here: https://p2a.co/sMDGDA7
