Tesla announced the start of production for a full self driving car, the Cybercab, in 2026. I always find this figure below useful to understand what we really mean with fully self driving. We are today on the edge between Level-2/Level-3, so to get to Level-5 in only 2 years seems to be an enormous leap. I am a believer of self-driving vehicles in certain environments (like highways or structured road networks), but I can’t imagine that we will reach a point anytime soon where cars can drive under ALL circumstances and ALL road conditions. I can think of roads or weather conditions today where even humans don’t know how to drive it :-). 

Question about self driving cars. Why is it that I can drive our 2020 Subaru without touching the wheel and cruise control on with full breaking, which is completely an utterly unsafe given the technology it uses. But, if I look away from the road for two seconds in my 2023 Tesla with full self driving it freaks out with alerts and red flags and threatens to shut down. If anything, there should be more regulation on the cars that offer less technology to support self driving and a little more freedom for cars like Tesla that are doing it really well. Curious to hear your thoughts.

This is great. Our 3 months free trial just expired yesterday, so it’s great timing for us. Tesla activated Full Self Driving for 1 month for all eligible vehicles and pushed out the latest version 12.3.2.1. Full Self Driving (FSD) is very easy to use. The hardest bit is trusting the car to make the right choice. Once you do, it’s both exciting and relaxing to have the car drive. From my experience, the neural network driving stack is the threshold to bring it mainstream. The latest version (v12.5) of Tesla’s Full Self Driving is downloading to my car now! Early reports are that it’s evolved from an “Uber driver” level of smoothness to a “limousine chauffeur” level of smoothness. Can’t wait to try it out during my errands today. As I’ve said many times before, having a Tesla is like having the childhood thrill of Christmas morning several times a year because the car keeps getting new features downloaded to it every few weeks. It’s a front row seat to the future. And what a glorious future it is- mobility that offers revolutionary convenience, efficiency, and safety. Viva rEVolution!

I Drove A Gas Car Today, For The First Time In Over A Year And A Half, After Driving My Tesla: It Was Like Going Back To A Horse And Buggy I drove a gas car today, my old Honda Fit from around 2008, in order to drive to the gas station and get gas. It was quite a big difference from driving my Tesla, which I have been driving solely over the last 21 months. Yes, that car is from 2008 and gas cars are a little more evolved today with a center screen, cameras and what not, but it was still quite awkward starting it, driving it, and getting it to the gas station. Right away, I was trying to shift the car as if it were my Tesla and of course, that didn't work. The shifter was between the two front seats. Also, I had to start the car, which took a bit to figure out. Once I started the car and then shifted the car to reverse, the car started to move and I panicked. I was not used to the car moving just from shifting, as a Tesla will not move until you press the accelerator pedal. In addition to that, I panicked because there was no screen with cameras to assist me with backing up or to show a 3D view of my surroundings. You've been reading a lot about my self driving car experiences. Today I want to share with you a 17 minute video that shows a 90 minute ride through Los Angeles with zero mistakes. This is truly a marvel of technology, and in a few weeks time this exact version is planned to be made available to every Tesla driver that wants this in the US. Note that this perfection today still only happens in certain parts of California, where most of the training data seems to come from. You know from my own experience log that it doesn't look that stable yet in the Boston area. Either way - this is some mind blowing stuff if you take a moment and think about what's happening here, and what the implications are for owning something like this (which costs WAY less than you might think by the way - new Model 3s now start in the $30k (!) range, and the self-driving is a $200/month add on if you want it.) Tesla Wants Me Back: Surviving Near-Death with Full Self-Driving I have been offered a complimentary full self-driving (FSD) trial from Tesla! However, my history with FSD has been quite eventful. In the past, I actually opted to have it removed from my Vision - Model 3 after it put me in two near-death situations. Once, during a late-night road trip, it unexpectedly changed lanes into oncoming traffic, narrowly avoiding a collision thanks to quick reflexes. Another time, it decided to make a sudden left turn towards a construction site ditch, only stopped by my emergency brake mere inches from disaster. While I strongly believe in the potential of autonomous driving technology, these experiences have made me cautious. I've always been a firm believer in taking full responsibility behind the wheel, and these incidents reinforced that belief. So, for now, I'll stick to 'fully self-driving' without FSD until I overcome the trauma – which might take a bit of time! Still, I understand Tesla's motive behind offering this free trial. It's likely part of their ongoing efforts to gather more data and refine their AI algorithms. Plus, with the recent price drop from $15,000 to $8,000 for FSD, it may be intriguing to some to see how far the technology has come. I just got a self-driving car, and the reviews from my passengers have been pretty consistent: “I can't believe the car was driving itself.” I generally don’t tell my friends ahead of time that the Tesla can drive itself (it's not always obvious because you still have to sit in the driver's seat and intervene if necessary). Without any preconceived notions, I can get their honest opinion. On the other hand, if I make a big deal out of the self-driving capabilities ahead of time, people start to grade every little thing and judge it based on whatever their predictions were. (I would never fake-out my mom on something like that or I’d never hear the end of it.) I think it’s proof that the car basically just drives like any human driver most of the time (the early research shows accident rates among human drivers are 3x higher than Tesla autopilot-assisted drivers.) That said, it’s definitely not perfect. Sometimes it does weird stuff like lurch forward in a jerky manner when waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn. I’m curious if anyone else has ridden in one of these?
