Our 22-year old family tradition involves swimming in the Bow River right before Thanksgiving dinner. As much as i hate it, I will continue to do it because it’s fun and unites us as a family. It led me to think about how we use tradition in our own businesses. At its best, tradition gives your company its identity. It grounds your business in a set of values, a purpose, and a culture that’s been passed down and maintained over time. Tradition can build trust with employees and customers alike. LYRIC: I'm on a big jet plane, with my briefcase crammed in my veins. Great song today! Traveling for work might sound glamorous to those who don't do it regularly, but the reality often falls far from the perception. Whether you're flying or driving, the experience can be exhausting, stressful, and disruptive to both your professional and personal life. Air travel for work can be a logistical nightmare. Early morning flights mean sacrificing sleep, while delays and cancellations wreak havoc on tight schedules. The process of navigating airports, enduring long security lines, and dealing with cramped seating adds layers of discomfort. Once at the destination, adjusting to different time zones can lead to jet lag, making it challenging to stay productive. Hooray! On the other hand, traveling by car presents its own set of challenges. Long hours behind the wheel can be monotonous and physically draining. Traffic jams, road construction, and unpredictable weather conditions add to the stress. Personally I like the feeling of movement so traffic jams are the worst for me regardless of any podcast/music I may have on. Both modes of travel disrupt work-life balance and your productivity. Frequent business trips can lead to missed family events and a general sense of being disconnected from one's personal life. The constant movement can also take a toll on mental and physical health, resulting in burnout and decreased job satisfaction. Luckily I don't have to do it anymore. While work travel may occasionally offer new experiences, the downsides mainly being fatigue and personal sacrifice—often overshadow the perceived benefits. I am reminded every day how important it is to have good people around you, especially during my time with Woodland Group, where teamwork is right at the heart of everything we do. Starbucks recently welcomed its new CEO, Brian Niccol. And while I appreciate coffee - and coffee chains - can be a polarizing topic, there was something in his message that caught my eye. Here are the four areas that he and his team will focus on initially: 1. Empowering our baristas to take care of our customers. 2. Get the morning right, every morning. 3. Reestablishing Starbucks as the community coffeehouse. 4. Telling our story. While it's a back-to-basics approach, #4 stood out to me. Storytelling is an incredibly powerful tool and everyone has a story to tell. It creates emotional connections, making brands relatable and memorable. Through stories, brands can communicate their values, mission, and personality in a way that resonates with audiences on a deeper level. Stories evoke emotions, foster trust, and engage customers by showing rather than telling what the brand stands for. This helps differentiate the brand in a crowded market, builds loyalty, and turns customers into advocates.
