Prior to Podium I had inbound, outbound, closing, inside & field sales experience. When I got recruited for the SDR position, initially I thought - why would I take a step back to set appointments for the closers? Looking back 3 years now, it was the best decision I have ever made. I truly believe I would have struggled more if I jumped into a closer or leadership role in tech without doing SDR work first. You learn the fundamentals and understand your product and company. It was the biggest grind but most rewarding position I’ve had. I’ve been an early sales hire multiple times now. I’m bringing this up now, because it seems more than ever there are so many openings for first/founding sales roles. Here are a few things that helped me out tremendously. 1. Dive into the product head first. Physical goods, or software, it doesn’t matter. Understand what you’re selling, and become a subject matter expert as soon as you can. 2. Understand your buyer. What is motivating your buyer to buy your product? How are they incentivized? Do they only buy during a particular time of year, or could they make buying decisions any time? 3. Find outside mentorship. This could arguably be the most important point. Do what you can to find someone who you can learn from, bounce ideas off, and is also an expert or at least very experienced in the field. 4. Flood your inbox with industry information. Weekly newsletters about the industry you sell in can cover crucial pieces of information to help you consult and sell to your customers. 5. Be the person that your buyer can truly trust. Being consultative, helpful, insightful, and assertive (not pushy!), will make big wins that much better, and challenging conversations that much easier. I lost 30k in tech sales in 6 months a few years ago. Hope this story can help someone: Story is I'm crushing it at my first role. Making really good money. Stupid good if you ask me. But...... There's an itch telling me I should be making "more". I should "own" a boat. I should do this, I should own that. So, I found this great company (and its truly a great company), where the OTE possibly -keyword- could be a lot more. So, I jumped ship. What did I leave by jumping ship? --Fully built out pipeline with years of deals --Loving team that I had known for years --Product that I knew inside and out, and was confident in --6 months of commissions that I would have made for the rest of the year All in all, I lost about 30k for the last 6 months of the year in the job switch. Which, is not a fun pill to swallow. The new company was great, but the 30k difference stung. I say this to warn everyone - before making a switch, make sure its what you really want to do. And think things through, all the way through. And be prepared to make less money in the switch, at least for a while.
