Client Spotlight - PaveDrain - Permeable Paving System Who they are: PaveDrain is an innovative permeable articulating block paving system manufacturer based out of Milwaukee, WI. The PaveDrain design idea came when the company founder and president, Doug Buch, was driving on I65 in 2007, and the rest, as they say, is history. What do they do? The PaveDrain permeable paving system solves multiple stormwater management and transportation problems in one product. The PaveDrain system is made of permeable articulating concrete blocks (P-ACB) that creates a performance pavement and integrates the patented arched reservoir to maximize on site stormwater capacity (storage and detention). The PaveDrain system allows for a more natural (vertical) infiltration path to help recharge local groundwater while reducing first flush pollutants. Yesterday I got to visit a park and ride off I-83 and got to listen to JMT talk about the stormwater management design of the project. One thing we learned about was a level spreader with an outlet structure to help manage water and where it ends up. This system works by water coming out of the outlet structure and being evenly distributed over the level spreader. This creates sheet flow and spreads the flow out, instead of it running in a single line, preventing erosion. The dispersed flow will then travel down through the vegetation and end up in the stream nearby. This system costs less than ten thousand dollars, making it significantly more budget friendly than other potential stormwater management systems. This is a great example of sheet flow, which we learned about in class. Sheet flow is runoff that flows over the surface in a thin, even layer, not in a concentrated channel.

Interesting discussions this week at the Federal Highway Administration Sustainable Pavements Technical Working Group meeting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Over 70 participants from a broad cross-section of the pavement sustainability community were in attendance. Day one included a insightful update from the Use-Stage Technical Subgroup (including Migdalia Carrion-Alers, Kurt Smith, Thomas Van Dam and John Harvey) on ongoing efforts related to use-phase impacts. Roughness, structural response (stiffness) and texture were all acknowledged as factors influencing fuel consumption of vehicles traversing pavement surfaces. A considerable amount of time was spent discussing implementation of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), including establishing industry average thresholds for steel, concrete and asphalt. Gina Ahlstrom and LaToya Johnson with Federal Highway Administration provided an update on the $2 billion Low Carbon Transportation Materials Grant Program (https://lnkd.in/gzJ8js5t). Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) program implementation updates were also provided by Peter Bacas (EPA) and Walter Tersch (GSA). I couldn't resist the opportunity to highlight the Guide for Reducing the Cradle-to-Gate Embodied Carbon Emissions of Paving Concrete (https://lnkd.in/gj7xh-Eq) we just published last month. There are lots of developments in the lower carbon construction materials space, and we are doing our part at the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) to provide useful resources that relate to reduced carbon concrete paving mixtures. We'll continue to put those resources at https://lnkd.in/gm-dUpB2. #lowcarbon, #sustainability, #concretepaving

Importance of Soil Compaction in Road Construction 🌱🛣️ Proper soil compaction is a key factor in extending the lifespan of roadways, as it significantly improves their engineering properties. So, what exactly is soil compaction? It's the process of applying energy to loose soil to eliminate voids, increasing its density and, consequently, its load-bearing capacity and stability, among other properties. The goal is to enhance the engineering properties of the soil. 🚜🌿 Why is soil compaction so important? 🌟 1️⃣ Increased Load-Bearing Capacity 💪 2️⃣ Minimized Settlement 🔧 3️⃣ Improved Water Drainage 🌧️ 4️⃣ Reduced Soil Swelling and Shrinkage 🏞️ 5️⃣ Frost Damage Prevention❄️ Next time you embark on a construction project, remember the vital role of soil compaction in ensuring robust and durable infrastructure. 🏗️💡 #SoilCompaction #InfrastructureEngineering #ConstructionInsights #construction #civilengineering #sustainability
