A new paper introducing MoRA as a replacement for LoRA in PEFT. The team researched the limitations of LoRA, concluding that LoRA can have limited improvement on deep reasoning capabilities of LLMs due to the low rank of the adaptors. Instead, they proposed MoRA, which is a square matrix to replace the two low rank adaptors using the same amount of trainable parameters (e.g. in LoRA, ΔW = BA, B.shape = [4096, 8], A.shape = [8, 4096], r = 8; in MoRA, ΔW = M, M.shape = [256, 256]). The M matrix has to undergo a compression and a decompression step during forward pass to fit the shape of the original weights. The paper also proposed several algorithms to do so. MoRA showed better results on LLMs’ reasoning capabilities and continual pretraining. Even when LoRA uses the same rank as MoRA (e.g. 256), MoRA can converge faster than LoRA in terms of training loss. Paper: https://lnkd.in/ec3V_fd6

The implicit goals are providing a hands-on exposition of key concepts and techniques in applied computer science, and a compelling synthesis of core topics from digital architectures, compilation, operating systems, and software engineering. We make this synthesis concrete by walking students through 12 hands-on projects.
