Up in Sheffield earlier this week for #Civicon2024, the annual conference of the Civic University Network and National Civic Impact Accelerator. An inspiring couple of days and great to have an opportunity to talk about some of our work at Goldsmiths. I've come back with much to think about and act on. A couple of key take-homes and standouts for me: * Students * are becoming much more central to how we think about the civic role of universities. Community engaged learning, links between curriculum and local partners, developing 'regenerative' models of teaching and learning, activating the city as a lab… these were real cross-cutting conference themes and reflected in the launch of the new report on 'Enhancing the Student Civic Experience' launched at the conf. We have been doing a lot of work in this area recently at Goldsmiths, too, so these conversations were very timely. * Mutual benefit* – is always the key to this work and best when looked at honestly. For me, this came out most clearly in the most 'Sheffield' focused panel, pictured below. This conversation brought together HE leaders from both Sheffield unis, the Council and also (crucially) reps from business and manufacturing, in the well-chosen venue of Sheffield's Cutler's Hall: a hub for the city’s industrial heritage and ongoing manufacturing industries. A clear message from this session was that everyone benefits from working together to make the city a better place. It’s not about noblesse oblige on the part of universities. Students will want to come to vibrant, attractive, exciting cities and that is what we in HE want to happen. Improving cities is in everyone’s interests. * Inequalities in our sector * – a bit of an elephant in the room at the conference, but the civic university movement looks and feels very different for universities in different states of financial buoyancy or distress. At future gatherings of this type I’d like to see more exploration of ‘civic engagement when times are tough’ or even ‘anchor institutions when the anchor comes loose’. With the current financial woes for universities increasingly nudging their way up the news agenda and possibly the policy agenda too, a more open debate about the impacts of this on the civic university movement would be really valuable. Sorry for the long post, but a great conference and lots to think about. I'm looking forward to the next one! #civicuniversities #universities #highereducation #civicon2024

Don't just take our word for it... At ARC, we believe that the essence of innovation lies not only in ideas but also in the community that nurtures these ideas. Our network, made up of campuses in Oxford, Hammersmith, Uxbridge, and Harwell, stands as a testament to this belief, serving as home to over 300 leading science and technology organisations. We're all about growing together through collaboration and social interaction. That's why we've put together a community program open to everyone in our network. From monthly member networking lunches, and breakfasts, to masterclasses, skills training and breakout spaces across each campus, we've designed activities to match everyone's schedule, needs and wants. So, don't just take our word for it - see what our members have to say about being part of the ARC network in one of our favourite videos to date. Because there's nothing quite like seeing people's faces light up when you ask them about our ecosystem. It is, no doubt, an unexpected turn of events that may disrupt the education of many talented students. However, let's remember that change, albeit uncomfortable at times, also brings about new opportunities for growth and learning. This might be an excellent time for parents and students to explore other educational environments that could potentially better suit their child's unique needs and talents. Remember, the value of education is not confined within the walls of any institution. It's about the knowledge and skills that are gained, the character that is developed, and the resilience that is nurtured. So, let's turn this 'shock and disappointment' into an opportunity to seek better educational avenues for our children, to continue to nurture their individual talents and strengths. #SuntecInternationalSchoolClosure #EducationalTransition #ResilienceInEducation #OpportunitiesInChange https://lnkd.in/dP3HduRY I am #Stevenchinyl and I co-founded #AidavaxTech, #UCloudAsiaSG and founded #VentureDomainHosting. Our most recent webinar highlighted the valuable discussions that came to light during our Round Table in June, so here are a few of our key takeaways: 1️⃣ The New Normal? We explored the current types of student housing stock at the city level and discussed how this impacts students’ experiences and choices. Understanding these trends is crucial for adapting to the changing needs of the student population. 2️⃣ Supporting Students with Additional Needs With 28% of students now reporting additional needs, the question is: how can providers do more? From improved accessibility to enhanced services, there is a clear opportunity for innovation in creating more inclusive environments. 3️⃣ Collaboration is Key! Collaboration is powerful - across the sector, as universities, housing providers, and policymakers, we can come together with a shared goal: to better support students and create thriving communities. How can we do this better? Catch the full webinar here 👉 [https://lnkd.in/eZWVZZGs] #StudentHousing #Collaboration #InclusiveHousing #SupportingStudents #Webinar
