Women like Shanti from Chhota village in Jharkhand, hailing from the Paharia tribe and classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG), are now torchbearers 🏅of hygiene practices in their communities. What began as part of counselling sessions under our Mother and Child Health & Nutrition program has now become a regular practice. Shanti shares, "Before joining the program, no one in my community paid much attention to hygiene. But after realizing the importance of washing hands with soap 🧼 for my child’s health, I now make it a point to practice it, and even my husband follows this habit.” This simple yet impactful practice has brought a significant change, improving the understanding of hygiene and sanitation in several households. Under our program through community kitchens, we nourish lives and empower women 💪 as advocates of health, nutrition🌿 and hygiene while supporting maternal mother and child health as the 1000 Days approach unfolds. Active across 64 locations in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha, we serve pregnant women and lactating mothers, and children up to 24 months. As part of this program we provide nutritious cooked meals🍲, promote institutional deliveries 🏥, raise awareness about pre-and postnatal care, and offer counselling sessions. We also connect families to health services and facilitate access to government schemes like- Janani Suraksha Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Additionally, we support Village Health Sanitation and Nutrition Day held monthly, and giving women a platform to voice their concerns. Ensuring a healthier future for pregnant women, lactating mothers and children through sustained efforts. #RiseAgainstHungerIndia #CSR #HygeineForHealth #WomenForChange #GrassrootsImpact #SustainableHealth #WellnessforAll #givingback #empoweringwomen #CaringForAll

In Assam's tea plantations, pregnant women struggle to access the state-sanctioned cash benefit of INR 12,000 under the Wage Compensation Scheme, aimed at enhancing nutrition and care. Frontline workers, supported by the District Program Management Unit (DPMU) and a multistakeholder forum, launched the "MAAdol" campaign to strengthen the scheme's implementation. This effort extended coverage to over 5,000 beneficiaries, resulting in a disbursement of INR 9,180,000. Similarly, in Chhattisgarh, with a 30 percent tribal population, three frontline worker (FLW) core groups were established in Kanker district. Their main objective was to identify high-risk pregnancies and develop personalised follow-up plans to improve birth outcomes. On #NationalSafeMotherhoodDay, we would like to highlight these initiatives which are part of Project Saksham — a unique collaboration involving USAID, PATH, Piramal Swasthya, Jhpiego, and Deloitte, aiming to implement high-impact interventions in Indian states with a high burden of maternal, newborn, and child morbidity and mortality. #PiramalGroup #Healthcare

Maternal and Newborn Survival Initiative (MANSI+) by #TataSteelFoundation, is our effort to improve the health of mothers and children. Under this initiative, we train community health workers (locally called Sahiyyas in Jharkhand) in low-cost, home-based practices to care for the mother and her child. We also equip them with adequate resources for the same, and then monitor the progress of their intervention. Through the unique real-time digital app – Operation Sunshine – that allows for better tracking, we have now reached farther regions, and have been able to improve the effectiveness of the entire project. Today, what began as a simple initiative has evolved into the country’s largest consolidated maternal, neonatal, and infant health programme with MANSI+. This programme allows us to support girls and women through various stages of their lives, from childhood to motherhood. The programme includes nutritional, sociological and institutional healthcare to fight all the factors that contribute to an increase in mortality. Through this initiative, we are working towards strengthening rural healthcare and providing a better, healthier life to every woman, girl and child. #ThisIsTata #TataSteel Tata Steel Foundation Tata Steel

#Field_Experience: Addressing Early Marriage and Malnutrition in Rural Jharkhand Today, I participated in a VHSND (Village Health, Sanitation, and Nutrition Day) in Jaltanda village, Karra block. During the event, I had the opportunity to understand various underlying issues faced by the local community, including why malnourished children were not being taken to MTC centers. One of the most concerning revelations was from a 15-year-old girl, Pinky Balmuchu, who had eloped and married at a young age. She visited the VHSND to take a pregnancy test. Through in-depth conversations with Anganwadi worker Polina Rogde, I learned about the prevalent practice of *early marriages* and the alarming #Dhukku_Pratha" – a form of informal live-in relationships, leading to early pregnancies. Many of these young girls fail to register their pregnancies in the first trimester due to social stigma, lack of awareness, or migration for work. We discussed the need for collective efforts to address malnutrition, raise awareness on early registration during pregnancy, and tackle harmful practices like *Dhukku Pratha*. By working with Anganwadi workers, Sahiya, health workers, and ANM, we aim to ensure *institutional deliveries* and empower the community with proper guidance and education. Awareness is the key to breaking these cycles, and together, we are working towards creating a healthier future for the young women and children of Jharkhand. #PiramalFoundation #Fieldwork #Healthcare #WomenEmpowerment #Nutrition #Jharkhand #SocialWork #ChildMarriage #Aspirational_Bharat_collaborative

2nd Day Devi… To combat child hunger and malnutrition in 1975 the Govt launched the Anganwadi programme. There are 13.63 lakh sanctioned Anganwadi centres across India. These grassroots workers take government goals to the needy. India's infant mortality rate (IMR) is expected to be 25.799 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2024. It has come down from 190 in 1950 to 25 now indicating India's health and standard of living are improving. The IMR for US of A stands at 6 and is not the best while Monaco has one of the lowest IMRs in the world at 1.91 deaths per 1,000 live births. For a vast diverse country like India, the Anganwadi system works as the nervous system to reduce infant mortality. I hold highest esteem for all Anganwadi workers as they toil for no money but to see the infant next sunlight. So, my 2nd Devi is “*Ranima Das*” from Parakhowa village in Assam who has dedicated her life to Anganwadi. She has been chosen to represent 23 lakh Anganwadi workers and helpers in the country. She has let her work dedication and commitment speak for herself. Anganwadi worked fight politics, Central & State interference, lack of facilities and meagre salary. Inspite of all these challenges, for the last seventeen years, Das continues serving the children and pregnant women in the villages.

India has the highest number of stunted and underweight children in the world. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) 2019-21: 35.5% of children under five years of age in India are stunted. 19.3% are wasted. 32.1% are underweight. In states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the percentage of malnourished children aged 3-6 years attending Anganwadis can be as high as 40%. Additionally, 67.1% of children aged 6-59 months are anemic. These statistics highlight the urgent need to address malnutrition among young children, especially those from marginalized communities. Proper nutrition is crucial for children aged 3-6 years in Anganwadis as it supports their rapid growth and development. Children need a balanced diet at this age to fuel their physical activities, support brain development, and boost their immune systems. Hence we are excited to launch Project Poshan by LECIN at Anganwadi centres, focusing on: - Improving children's health and well-being. - Reducing malnutrition. - Empowering mothers with nutritional knowledge. - Promoting sustainable eating habits. By enhancing health and nutrition, we aim to give young children a solid, healthy start, paving the way for a brighter future. Join us in nurturing the next generation towards a healthier and more promising tomorrow. Stay tuned for more updates and details! Anemia is a significant public health challenge in India, particularly among women and children. Recognizing this, Jharkhand is making strides towards tackling anemia through the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) initiative. This December, the focus is on creating awareness, ensuring timely iron-folic acid supplementation, and encouraging regular health check-ups in rural and urban areas alike. At the grassroots level, our community health workers, Sahiyas, and ASHAs are playing a crucial role in counseling families and distributing IFA tablets. Collaborative efforts with schools and Anganwadi centers are ensuring that adolescent girls and pregnant women receive the care they need. Let’s work together to make Jharkhand healthier and anemia-free! #AnemiaMuktBharat #Jharkhand #PublicHealth #CommunityDevelopment

Malnutrition continues to affect a significant portion of children, women, and girls in the remote regions of Bihar. Many children are underweight, stunted. These issues extend beyond childhood as it has a huge impact on the health of women and young girls as well, particularly during pregnancy. This is leading to weakened immune systems, slow growth and diminished learning capacity. The Anganwadi workers, who play a crucial role in tackling alarming issues like this, face numerous barriers due to inadequate facilities and lack of resources. Says Mamta Kumari from Gaya, Bihar in her article " गांव को कुपोषण मुक्त बनाने के लिए मजबूत पहल की जरूरत ". Mamta who is associated with Charkha through Project Disha, raises her voice to initiate steps against malnutrition faced by the future leaders. Support their efforts by spreading the word for a healthier future. "Didi, hum toh aaj hi #Anganwadi center pe jaa ke iron ki goli le ke aayenge or roj khayenge!” This wasn’t just an excited remark—it was the reflection of a realisation, a sense of #empowerment, and an understanding of what’s available to them. This moment came during a #roleplay activity in one of our sessions under #ProjectSwasthKanya, where we focused on the #schemes and #services available for #adolescentgirls. We conducted this session because knowing ‘why’ health matters is important, but knowing ‘how’ to seek health and nutrition care is transformative. Many girls grow up unaware of the resources and schemes designed for their benefit. For instance, something as vital as access to #nutritionalsupplements often goes unnoticed, simply because the information isn’t reaching them in relatable ways. To bridge this gap, we used a role-play activity where the girls took turns acting as health service providers and community members. Through this activity, they not only learned about the resources available but also gained practical insights into how and where to access them. Why is this important? Because #healthseekingbehaviour requires awareness, clarity, and accessibility. When adolescent girls understand these tools, they are more likely to make informed decisions—not just for themselves, but for their families and future generations. For us at #ZealGrit, this session was another step in shaping that behaviour, turning awareness into action, and creating #rippleeffects in the #community. How can we make sure more girls understand and utilise the services available to them? Share your thoughts in comments!
