This MLK Day, we reflect on the powerful connection between Dr. King’s vision and the ongoing fight against homelessness. A recent report by the UIC Center for Research on Race and Public Policy in Illinois,(https://lnkd.in/gcDa-rVk) Black Homelessness in Illinois: Structural Drivers of Inequality, highlights how systemic racism and inequality perpetuate this crisis. Dr. King fought tirelessly against the intertwined evils of racism and poverty. Today, we honor his legacy by recommitting ourselves to justice and equity for all. Together, we can continue his work and build a brighter, fairer future. “Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?' – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. If you're interested in joining us and giving back, visit www.beds-plus.org to learn more about how you can get involved. Together, we can continue to answer Dr. King’s call to serve others and make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. #ThankYouVolunteers #MakingADifference #MLK #VolunteerWithBedsPlus #CommunitySupport

**Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Call to Service and Unity** On this day honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we’re reflecting on his powerful message of hope, justice, and collective action. Dr. King believed that "Everybody can be great because everybody can serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love." Today is a **National Day of Service** that challenges each of us to make a meaningful difference in our communities. Whether through volunteering, supporting local organizations, or simply showing compassion to those around us, we can continue Dr. King's profound legacy of social justice and equity. His words remain as powerful today as they were decades ago: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny." How will you honor Dr. King's memory today? We encourage everyone to: - Engage with local community organizations - Commit to serving others - Reflect on how we can advance equity and understanding #MLKDay #DayOfService #SocialJustice #CureStaffing

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr Day this January 20th, despite racist rhetoric that has become prevalent in our society, we want to emphasize the importance that as long as we stand by one another, we aren't alone. There are many political pressures that will affect our sector in the upcoming years. Even so, we must push forward and not abandon the work that needs to be done to preserve our unity and a better future for all. On this historic day, and the days leading up to it, we know many will attend events out in the communities. At these events be sure to prioritize your safety, both physically and mentally, and most importantly rely on your community. There are stressors all around us but even so we will persist in the work of MACC's own IDEA statement, "resisting systems of oppression in nonprofit human services, and to standing in solidarity with our network and communities." The work of honoring MLKs legacy is not for one day. It is every day spent fighting for unity and dreaming of a better, brighter, more just future. Now more than ever it's critical that we don't abandon MLKs legacy and the work that still needs to be done. Here are resources for events, staying safe in crowds, watching out for your mental health, and dealing with turbulent feelings towards the upcoming Inauguration. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Today the U.S. celebrates and remembers the day the last slaves were set free-- nearly 2 and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, nearly 2 months after the Civil War ended, and almost a month after the Confederate military was disbanded in Texas. There were still people living and working in slavery for that long after they were technically freed, on paper. Leaders need to be committed to doing better in all aspects of their work, to work toward ethical practices and outcomes, and strive for justice within their realm of power. They also need to have a sense within themselves about the quote above from MLK, and to know that the work for justice is never finished. They also need to recognize and celebrate the wins, but also be sure not to center themselves when it's not about them. How you recognize and celebrate today depends on how much this holiday affects and is meant for you. Happy Juneteenth! Celebrate today, and get back to work making it better, tomorrow. If you feel led to give today, the African American Advisory Alliance was established in the midst of the racial unrest in 2020 in conversation with the City of Pomona, and "set the aim towards efforts of reconciliation and equity in our community."
