Now is the time to think about how you want to honor Dr. King on this day. What does meaningful service mean to you? Be realistic with your expectations and don’t overburden organizations and communities by putting extra work on them. If you are doing a corporate service project on this day, follow the lead of the organization/community and let them tell you what they need and how many people they need to do it. Service days are a heavy lift for non-profits. Do the things the organization doesn’t have time to do. Help set up their new office space, paint some walls, pull some weeds, put together some marketing materials for a program or event. If you can, come with the materials needed to complete the project (paint costs $$ and picking up supplies costs staff time). Have a special skill? Ask them what would help them reach their goals, make their day-to-day better and enhance their services. Do the behind the scenes work and don’t expect to be face-to-face with those served by the org. Helping a neighbor in need or taking the day to learn something new around systemic racism, oppression or social justice is also an excellent way to spend the day. And shout out to City Year for decades of amazing leadership around projects on MLK Day of Service. You knock it out of the park every year and your hard work is seen!

Let’s challenge ourselves to make service a habit, not a holiday! 💭 Now imagine this…if every act of service sparked lasting change in our communities. Today (and everyday), as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy, let’s reflect on the transformative power of service. Dr. King showed us that service isn’t just an act of kindness during #MLKDay, Thanksgiving, and Christmas — it’s a tool for systemic change, a bridge to justice, and a path to equity. Every small action has the potential to ripple outward — building stronger, more connected communities. Whether it’s mentoring youth like Jameelah Hanif, Adjoa Mcdonald, and others; advocating for fair policies/policy reform like Dr. Kerby EL Lynch and others; working to provide shelter and support for the unhoused like Dionne Carter MPH, M.Div, DMin(c) and others; community ecosystem building like Raquelmarie Clark and others; helping with city planning and development like Tara Beasley-Stansberry and others; ensuring that the values of public service are upheld like #SheilaTennyson and others; or volunteering your time — every intentional act of service has the potential to spark lasting impact. Dr. King’s dream wasn’t about a single moment of action — it was about building a movement of compassion, justice, and inclusion. DAY 10: STAND UP FOR WHAT MATTERS Today, we are reminded of the profound wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His words inspire us to speak out and take action on issues that impact our communities. Silence in the face of injustice only perpetuates the status quo. Why Speaking Out Matters Empowerment: Giving voice to the voiceless and standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Awareness: Raising consciousness about critical issues, from civil rights to environmental justice. Change: Driving tangible change through advocacy, education, and community action. How You Can Get Involved 1 Educate Yourself and Others Knowledge is power. Learn about the issues affecting your community and share this information. 2 Advocate for Change Use your voice to demand justice and equity. Participate in local advocacy efforts. 3 Support Grassroots Movements Local organizations are pivotal in the fight for justice. Support them through volunteering, donations, or spreading their message. 4 Engage in Civic Participation Voting, attending town hall meetings, and engaging with policymakers are crucial actions for systemic change.
