⭐ Let's Unite for STI Awareness Week! ⭐ Over the past few days, miDiagnostics has been sharing facts about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Here are the key takeaways: 👉 High Prevalence: More than 1 million STIs are acquired every day worldwide, the majority of which are asymptomatic. 👉 Impact on personal life: STIs have a direct impact on sexual and reproductive health through stigmatization, infertility, cancers and pregnancy complications and can increase the risk of HIV. 👉 Routine Testing for everyone: Accurate (e.g. using molecular technology), multiplex, and routine testing for STIs can offer a solution. Ensuring that everyone has access to reliable testing can significantly reduce the spread of infections. At miDiagnostics, our mission is to positively impact lives. We want to help reducing the high STI prevalence rate and closing the healthcare gap. #STIawarenessweek #healthcare #miDX #togetherwecare

Over the past 10 years, New York State has eliminated Mother to Child Transmission of HIV. We must now eliminate congenital syphilis. Every case of congenital syphilis is entirely preventable and represents a failure of our public health system. Congenital syphilis is a result of untreated syphilis infection that is transmitted in utero during pregnancy or during vaginal delivery. Effective May 3, 2024, New York State requires a syphilis test for all pregnancies during the third trimester under Public Health Law §2308, as amended by sections 4 and 5 of Part AA of Chapter 57 of the Laws of 2023. Before, syphilis testing was only required at the first examination during pregnancy and again at delivery under 10 NYCRR §69‑2.2. Now, New York State requires three tests: 1. First examination during pregnancy 2. Third trimester 3. At delivery This new law requiring third trimester testing that went into effect today will help eliminate congenital syphilis.

📊 More than 1 million Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide among people aged 15–49. Most of these infections show no symptoms. STIs are a significant global health issue, impacting sexual and reproductive health 🌍. They can be transmitted through unprotected sex or non-sexual means, such as from mother to child during pregnancy 🤰 or through shared drug use 💉. The stigma surrounding STIs, coupled with factors like poverty and lack of access to healthcare, contributes to rising infection rates 📈. Untreated STIs can lead to severe health problems, including an increased risk of HIV, cervical cancer, infertility, and stillbirth 🚨. Vaccines for Hepatitis B and HPV have been successfully introduced in 140 countries 🌐, but there’s still a long way to go in ensuring global access to prevention and treatment. Awareness campaigns 📢, the use of condoms 🛡️, and accessible sexual health education 📚 are proven to decrease the prevalence of STIs. However, limited access to diagnostic tests, especially in low- and middle-income countries 🌍, remains a barrier to effective treatment. #SexualHealth #STIAwareness #GlobalHealth #HPVVaccine #HealthEducation #SafeSex #WorldVisualized #DataVisualization #WorldData Source: World Health Organization

It’s interesting how much healthcare language has changed over the years. For example, when I was pregnant, I was called a "geriatric mother," but now the term "advanced maternal age" is more common. It’s a small change, but it feels a little less harsh. I also worked palliative care in my early career and I cringed at some of the wording used. Thankfully this has dramatically moved forward and although conversations about dying and end of life care are not easy to have we are all getting better at how we do this. And in HIV medicine, there’s been a shift too—people now say "living with HIV" instead of just "HIV patient," putting the focus on living with the condition and helping to stop people feel stigmatised. There’s also an interesting difference between calling something a "disease" versus a "condition," especially with rare health issues. "Condition" feels more flexible and manageable, while "disease" can seem more fixed or negative. Should we consider using "condition" rather than "disease" more routinely in rare? #HealthcareLanguage #AdvancedMaternalAge #LivingWithHIV #PalliativeCare #RareConditions #HealthcareEvolution #WordsMatter

⚠️ Let's Talk About Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): A Silent Disruptor of Women’s Health ❓ Did you know that Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), a common yet often underdiagnosed condition, can significantly impact women’s reproductive health? It’s more than just an imbalance in the vaginal microbiome – it’s linked to increased risks of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HIV, and pregnancy complications such as preterm birth and low birth weight. 🤰 Even more concerning, untreated BV can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, affecting fertility. Recent studies are shining a light on the crucial role of the vaginal microbiome in protecting women’s health, and the need for better diagnostics and treatments is clearer than ever. With growing concerns around antibiotic resistance, it’s time we push for more research and awareness. Let’s continue investigating BV and fight for better reproductive health for women everywhere. 💪 #WomensHealth #Microbiome #BV #ReproductiveHealth #Research

Nearly half of new HIV infections are among women. Condoms are the most effective but men often refuse to use them, leaving women with less agency & protection against STIs. So why aren't there more products for women in the market? Current multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) that protect against pregnancy and STIs face regulatory and funding challenges, slowing their availability. Researchers are developing solutions like vaginal rings and combination pills, but progress is slow. Maggie F. writes more in this week's newsletter: https://bit.ly/3XWikyQ
