In the world there are good brands and bad brands. Facebook and Google are definitely inside the second category, even if they are one the most know brands. Just an example: 3 years ago users reported no way to get sms from them, causing #facebookdisabledme after 30 days. Now the issue is still the same. Same with Google (Account, Chrome, etc.), where they still talk about issues reported 10+ years ago ... ignoring 99.999% of all other issues too. What about Telegram? In this case we would say Telegram is in the middle. There is still some support for MacOS, even if they still haven't fixed various issues, but we need to consider that otherwise there is no way to contact them, no matter what the problem is. Account login issues support works even bad with Telegram. For banned accounts, we just tried one time and we got the account back immediately. At the same time we have: - An anti-trust decision against Google, declaring payments to browsers for default search status to be problematic. Including the $500M+/year that keeps Firefox afloat (80%+ of Mozilla's revenue). - Google Chrome finally starting to shut off Manifest V2, crippling ad blockers like uBlock Origin -- which BTW Firefox will continue to support. - Long-term threats to Google's business model like Perplexity and SearchGPT. - A continued lack of alternatives to Google and Bing as far as full-internet search indices. DuckDuckGo, Kagi, Searx, all depend on the Google and/or Bing's back-end. (Brave is making a go of it at least). The only thing I'm confident of is that anyone who claims they know how this all turns out is full of it.

PSA: Don’t leave YouTube open in any tabs. PCGamer: "It's not just you: YouTube is slowing down your PC if you have AdBlock installed by making your CPU sweat—though despite the company's past behaviour, it's probably AdBlock's fault. YouTube Premium members also appear to be impacted." (Harvey Randall) (Jan 16, 2024) "AdBlock users have been reporting widespread performance issues with the extension enabled on YouTube, and while suspicion justifiably fell on YouTube's head, the problem may not lie in the platform itself. In a thread posted to the YouTube subreddit over the weekend (thanks, 9to5Google) users noted that having AdBlock enabled caused slow load times and increased CPU usage, as one user writes: "This messes up the resources on the computer as a whole. It just kills chrome it seems." I decided to test this myself, and I noticed that having YouTube open with AdBlock increased my rig's CPU usage by around 17%. While using AdBlock or similar programs is against the website's terms of service, AdBlock is also a massively popular extension. On the Chrome web store it boasts 60 million users. From what I could see the increase was pretty consistent—so not a dangerous spike—but lower-end laptops mainly used for browsing could start having heat problems. At best it's inconvenient and annoying. This has led to troubleshooting paranoia, as sudden and unexplained performance dips can be a sign of hardware problems. User JotaroKujoxXx says they were "wondering why my laptop ran like a fucking jet for the last few days", while another commenter replies: "Yeah I've been deleting shit randomly thinking it was my storage space problem." The slow-down also appears to be impacting users who are subscribed to YouTube Premium while using AdBlocker for other websites, which is a problem—seeing as a subscription is a way to avoid ads without violating ToS, causing some users to feel hard done by. Our Guides Writer Sarah James tested the extension with Premium, and noted an increase of about 15-18%. While YouTube has come under severe suspicion—including from myself—said suspicion was not entirely unwarranted. In November of last year, TheVerge reported a five-second loading delay on other browsers running ad blockers, and the company's statements created a solid M.O for this kind of thing. The report stated that YouTube's communications manager Christopher Lawton "said that users will keep seeing issues like this as YouTube’s ad-blocker detection methods improve". These measures have made the company first-in-line to blame for any problems with these extensions—even when, as it turns out, it's (relatively) innocent. I've received a comment from Christopher Lawton (YouTube's communication manager) who says in no uncertain terms: "loading delays experienced by Adblock and AdBlock Plus users are not caused by our ad blocker detection efforts." If it floats and quacks like a duck, then understand and respect, it’s true nature. It is a duck. Corporations, generally maintain and grow a particular philosophy. Unfortunately, the philosophy of Facebook is not to respect user data privacy in any context. This apparently even includes on Facebook is interacting with other companies, or when Facebook is interacting with the users, engaging with other companies. There is no data privacy in Facebook applications, software or hardware. This isn’t debatable, this is just the price of interacting with Facebook, in any of its names, configurations, and products. Don’t pretend that a duck is anything but aduck.

Note to all: EVERY APP (particularly those from the "big" companies) that you install on a device CAN READ EVERYTHING on your device and send data back to its maker. All it takes is for the user to click OK since there is no way to accept only part of the Terms and Conditions. The spying is always a technical possibility, but it was also legal and even when not, it is often unsanctioned. The example below again proves why we need GDPR and why the GDPR enforcement still needs to be up to the legislator's intent. Even if some operating systems are better than others in creating guardrails, ONCE THE USER EMPOWERS THE APP, IT'S DONE. #ghostbusters #0trust

I have never had Facebook, although one could argue elements of LinkedIn have become a pseudo Facebook, but I digress. At best this is ethically wrong and at worse criminal?. Every person has their own reason(s) for what social media they use and why, so no judgement. The last thing you, as a user, should have to think about is an application intercepting data outside the actual application especially when the end user hasn’t explicitly authorized (in a way that the end user can plainly understand). A 100 page end user agreement in legalese doesn’t cut it, not ethically. Any way you slice this it’s bad. What I’d want to know is what data was collected, how was it used and how was it warehoused? What other data could have been collected? If Facebook is doing this…who else is doing this…hopefully not LinkedIn 😐.
