New publication: Preregistration and Registered Reports are gaining attention in toxicology and environmental health. If you want a detailed explanation of what they are and why they are important for research (and, by implication, why EBT has editorial policies that support these practices and submission formats), read this new paper by Daniel Lakens and colleagues. EBTC has been advocating for preregistration and the use of Registered Reports style submission formats for years. We set up a journal specifically to promote these kinds of practices (and others as well!). This paper explains in detail what preregistration means and why it is useful, articulating a very compelling argument for its use in research.

Dear Network, Today, I want to address the issue of animal experimentation in scientific research. Despite progress, animals are still used to test products. Mice, cats and dogs, particularly beagles, are subject to these tests. Beagles are often chosen because of their docile nature, which makes them easier to handle. Even more alarming is the existence of large-scale industrial breeding operations in France, such as those of the American group #MARSHALLBIORESOURCES , which supply Beagles to laboratories. These dogs are born and raised in deplorable conditions, confined in tiny boxes. Obviously there are alternatives, #NAMs have already proven their effectiveness! It is time to put an end to this practice. The association that I chair, ARGOS 42 , has launched a petition against these cruel tests and is campaigning for public funding to develop alternative scientific methods. While we are still the same program, composed of the same faculty and students, this re-branding more accurately reflects the research conducted by our members. Our program focuses on the molecular mechanisms whereby environmental agents- such as pesticides, air pollution, or PFAS- cause or exacerbate disease in humans. As such, our new title highlights both the scope and depth of our research.

The application of toxicogenomics data for uncovering and predicting the effects of chemical exposures has been a central research topic of FHAIVE in the past years. Despite the huge potential of omics data in toxicology, its widespread use has been hindered by challenges in standardization and interpretation. These challenges were tackled in a recent doctoral dissertation by one of the FHAIVErs, Laura Saarimäki. Laura took a deep dive into the intrinsic properties, functional characteristics, and translational potential of toxicogenomics data with the aim to support mechanistic chemical safety assessment and pave the way toward safer chemicals in the future.
