Embedding an effective risk culture is challenging and important. Done well, this will always be more effective and impactful than policies and procedures. Adaptive Cultures have done some great thought leadership in this area, suggesting that risk practitioners need to lift their game. Instead of strengthening frameworks and governance, practitioners should increase their focus on leadership, accountability, engagement and influence. In my view, this approach is more effective for businesses and more fulfilling for risk professionals. However, it also raises the bar in terms of the capabilities needed, which will be a challenge for some.
