Aya began college amid COVID-19, never imagining what she’d achieve. During her first year of virtual classes, she switched from civil engineering to Kennedy College of Sciences environmental science after a chat with Prof. Lori Weeden. By sophomore year, she was on campus, connecting with peers and studying abroad in Valencia, Spain, with Prof. Thomas Piñeros Shields. Aya interned for Valencia’s Climate Emergency Service, became a resident advisor her junior year, and later attended COP28 in Dubai. Going into her senior year, she landed a summer internship with the City of Everett, where she helped assess and evaluate tree conditions to mitigate the urban heat island effect. After graduating a semester early, she returned to Everett as an energy advocate intern. Now, Aya plans to pursue a master’s in urban and environmental policy at Tufts. "UMass Lowell was great. I don’t think I would have done so much or even considered this path for myself without the university," she says. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐢𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫? 👀 I’ve just finished my summer internship at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where I had the chance to work with the Halton Region government on a sustainability project. After 2 months of work, here are the key highlights: 🔘 We proposed a cogeneration energy system for 7 wastewater treatment plants. 🔘 We suggested a more energy-efficient alternative for the aeration process (MABR), which could save up to 45% of the energy previously used for this process. What can be expected from the implementation of this project? · A 24% reduction in electricity consumption per plant. · A 42% decrease in CO2 equivalent emissions. · Savings of 500 CAD per hour in energy costs. A big thank you to my colleagues and professors for making this journey unforgettable. Your support made all the difference!

After 3 eventful & interesting months of my internship at the Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation & Technology (Bundesministerium für Klimaschutz, Umwelt, Energie, Mobilität, Innovation & Technologie) in the Taskforce EU - Innovation and Technology, it is time to look back. The many interesting experiences I had can be summed up in 3 C's: 🌐 Complexity: Working at the intersection of Research, Innovation and Technology not only encompassed a myriad of topics, but the subject matter itself is often times quite technical. My learning curve throughout the last three months was incredibly steep - which made every day exciting. 🤝 Collaboration: Working at the EU-level as well as the national necessarily involves including different stakeholders - be that other ministries, DGs, industry and other groups. Hearing all stakeholders is important - though coordinating all of them is a difficult and often slow process. Nevertheless, input from all stakeholders is crucial to develop tractable, intelligent solutions that benefit everyone in the long-term. 🧠 Competence: The ministry’s work, spanning complex subjects, coordinative efforts, multilateral discussions, and strategic planning, was undoubtedly challenging. However, the Directorate General for Technology and Innovation is fortunate to have an incredibly knowledgeable and competent team. Their expertise played a key role in supporting my steep learning curve. No matter the question I had or how complex a process seemed, the team was always there to offer guidance, making collaboration both enriching and seamless. This allowed me to maximise the benefits from the internship - and of course it allowed me to play an active role in all of the workstreams. To close, I want to personally thank the people I worked closest with: Brigitte Weiß Falko Loher, Victor Pérez Delgado and Clara Wend - Thank you for making this experience so exciting and memorable! Next stop: Diplomatische Akademie Wien & Technische Universität Wien for the Master‘s in Environmental Technology and International Affairs. (On a personal note, if I had to pick a highlight of my internship, it would be the Industry Workshop in Brussels, which we organised together with the European Commission👇 )

🗓️ Day 2 of posting insights from my internship at the Association of Energy Engineers - Lebanon Chapter! 🌊 Eng. Ibrahim Kronfol, LEED Fellow addressed the key reasons for water reuse. Water reuse planning should start at the pre-concept design stage by identifying alternative water sources, non-potable water uses, water quality requirements, and appropriate treatment processes for the specific site conditions. 💬 I've appreciated his answer when someone asked "Why don't we treat all water with extreme treatment?" Mr. Kronfol answered, "The more I treat it, the more energy I need. Do I need drinking water to flush the toilet?" 🌳 There's a lot more to learn about building a truly sustainable economy. 🌍 I'm excited to share more insights from my internship experience! #AEE #Sustainability #Circular_Economy #Energy #Recycling
