Back to work! Christmas and new year is never that restful is it. We have exciting plans this year. As well as making some stellar films, we're continuing our social impact programme with Rethink Mental Illness, starting with Thrive LDN, and hoping to start a new scheme within the criminal justice system. Good morning, LinkedIn Family! Today, we’re tackling a topic that’s as vital as ever: Reducing the Stigma Around Mental Health in the Black Community. It’s a conversation we can’t afford to ignore. We’re in the midst of a mental health revolution, where understanding and acceptance are our weapons of choice. No more hiding, no more shame—let’s break free from the chains of stigma together. We need strategies! Strategies to #BreakTheStigma, strategies that work. Here’s how we do it: Open Dialogue: It starts with talking openly about mental health. We must break the silence and share our stories, our struggles, and our triumphs. When we talk, we heal, and we inspire others to do the same. Education is Key: Knowledge is power. We must educate ourselves and our communities about mental health. Understand what it is, what it is not, and how to support those in need. Supportive Allies: Allies play a pivotal role. We need friends, family, and advocates who stand with us, who understand us, who don’t judge us but lift us up. Self-Care: We can’t give what we don’t have. Self-care is foundational if we are serious about supporting one another. We must take care of ourselves, prioritize our well-being, and lead by example. Positivity and Resilience: It’s about flipping the script on negativity. We’re a strong, resilient community. Let’s celebrate our strengths and focus on the positive. Advocacy: Be a voice for change. Advocate for policies and practices that break the barriers to mental health care and resources in our community. Now, I’m calling on each one of you. Let’s be the change-makers. Let’s stand together and be a part of this movement. By sharing, educating, supporting, and advocating, we’re building a culture of mental well-being, where stigma has no place. It’s time to rise., Rise to the challenge of destigmatizing mental illness. It’s time to break free, break the stigma, and break through to a brighter, more understanding world. Family schedule for the 4th week of January 2024 With all other events that was happening last week, we manage to stick as close as possible to last week schedule. Family routines set out how families organise themselves to get things done, spend time together and have fun. Routines help family members know who should do what, when, in what order and how often. Routines also let your children know what's important to your family. Studies have shown that a timetable for kids at home, will more likely make them have better mental and physical health and higher cognitive skills. A family that plays together stays together. I never expected to hear this over and over in a support group called ASCA. (Adult Survivors of Child Abuse) A few years ago, I volunteered to be a leader for a support group a dear friend was starting. She found a curriculum that lay people could use to support and encourage those who had experienced any kind of abuse as a child. "Survivors to Thrivers". I found a space for us to meet and away we went. Once a week for a year, we met and worked through the process. No matter what had happened to each person, I realized they all said a version of the same thing. "I'm so lucky." Lucky that someone found out and helped out. Lucky that someone believed them when they told their story. Lucky that they were able to leave their abuser. I wondered what caused the difference between the people who felt lucky and those that felt bitter. What was the difference between those that worked on healing and those that continued the cycle of abuse? I didn't figure it out then, but I think I have some insight now. A comment from my trainer got my attention. I'm paraphrasing, "Some people want you to feel their pain, forget that!" Boom! The answer popped right into my head. The difference is there are those that want you to feel their pain and those that want you to share their joy, their hope, their healing. I'm so lucky that I found TFT Tapping. One of the hardest things as a parent is seeing your child hurting. While you can’t prevent your kids from being hurt, you can help them through it. *How you respond can help them heal or add to their pain.* There are several common ways children may experience trauma. Kids experience trauma when events cause intense feelings of fear, helplessness, or horror.With the widespread availability of internet access, children may see explicit content online. This can be distressing, leading to confusion and potential trauma as they struggle to understand and process it. Academic performance is another area where the effects of trauma can appear. *HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR KIDS COPE WITH TRAUMA?* First and foremost, create a safe and nurturing environment for your kids. This involves maintaining open communication, actively listening to your child's concerns, and validating their feelings. By doing so, you build trust and help your child feel more comfortable discussing their experiences. Providing reassurance and stability helps your child feel secure and supported. If your child continues to struggle with the effects of trauma despite your support, seek professional help.
