I am thrilled to see the growing focus on supporting working parents. However, I can't help but notice that most of this support centers on the early stages—parental leave and childcare for babies and toddlers. 👶🍼 Yes, the early years are an undoubtedly challenging season. And it’s not smooth sailing in the elementary, middle, or high school years either, I promise you. The idea that working parenthood gets simpler is a myth. Consider the gauntlet parents with older kids are running: ⚽ Early morning and late-night practices 🏫 Midday school events 🏖️ Long summer breaks & school holidays 🛒 Keeping the fridge stocked 📱 Navigating social media, AI, and deep fakes 💬 Fostering independence 🚗 Teaching your kid to drive 😰 Battling anxiety—for both you and your kids 📄 College applications and endless forms 👴 👵 Caring for aging parents (What am I forgetting?) Parenthood is a demanding journey at every stage. Yet, we rarely discuss how our challenges evolve as our kids grow, or how the supports we need from workplaces and society must evolve accordingly. It's that Back to School time of year again. As a child free by choice person, I do not envy working parents - at all. I feel for ya'll. • Drop off supplies, meet the teacher, later in the year - parent teacher conferences. Then you have donuts with parents, lunches with grandparents, and don't even get me started about the end of the year activities. • The very inconvenient drop off and pick up or bus times before and after school that do not at all align with most traditional work hours. Or what about those random in service days or other half days? • The activities and sports after school - that begin at 4pm. I am thankful I don't have to experience these complicated and oftentimes super coordinated things that come along with raising the next generation. However, in the same breath, it's important to point out that child free people: • Should not be expected to pick up the slack at work. • Should not be assumed to not be needed or involved in raising kids. As an Aunt, it's my pride and joy to show up to my nephews and nieces events and cheer them on as often as I am able to! In other cases, the involvement might be more significant and more involved. • Should not be viewed as "less than" because they don't have that exact juggle. Compassion and empathy go a long way. Flexibility isn't a desire, it's absolutely a need in today's society of dual working parents. And, let's continue discussions around childcare support and policies, so that whole segments of people are not excluded from workplaces. I work full-time and run a business, and I decided to keep my babies home... NOT BY CHOICE! Motherhood is a journey filled with joy, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. But one reality hit me hard: the cost of childcare is astronomical. Imagine feeling like you're paying for a second mortgage just to ensure your kids are cared for while you work. Even with a high income, the numbers just don’t add up. After countless hours of deliberation, budgeting, and weighing the pros and cons, I made the tough decision to keep my babies home. This wasn’t an easy choice or even the ideal one, but it was necessary. The high cost of childcare forced my hand. Mentally, this decision has been both a relief and a struggle. On one hand, I cherish the extra time with my children and the memories we're creating together. On the other hand, the pressure of balancing work and taking care of small children have been overwhelming. I'm so thankful for the community I lean on. This experience has underscored a critical need: comprehensive paid parental leave and more affordable childcare options. Families shouldn't have to choose between financial stability and quality care for their children. It’s time for systemic change that supports all parents, regardless of income. That’s why I’m passionate about the Moms First campaign. This initiative advocates for policies that prioritize the well-being of mothers and families by pushing for: 👪 Paid Parental Leave: Every parent deserves the opportunity to bond with their newborn without the fear of financial instability. Paid parental leave ensures that parents can take the time they need to nurture their children and themselves during those critical early months. 👶 Affordable Childcare for All: Quality childcare should not be a luxury. It should be accessible and affordable for every family, regardless of their income level. By investing in affordable childcare, we support working parents, boost the economy, and provide our children with a strong foundation for their future. When moms thrive, families and communities flourish. We need to stand together, lift each other up, and push for the policies that will make motherhood more sustainable and less financially burdensome for everyone. It takes more than sharing the same home to create strong relationships with our kids. Unfortunately, sometimes we get so busy or distracted that we can feel distant from our children. Additionally, sometimes it’s tough to find common ground. Some of our kids feel very different than we are, and it can be difficult to find ways to bond. Our relationships will flourish when we find various ways to connect with our kids, when we show our kids that our relationship is good for the serious and the silly, the difficult and the fun.
