Can you spare 10 minutes of your time? This is an exciting opportunity for you to share your thoughts and opinions on the description of a new type of ICD, which has recently been launched. Although many of you will never need a device like this, your feedback would be really valuable. ICDs are implantable heart devices, similar to pacemakers, for patients with serious arrhythmias and at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. An ICD is like having your own defibrillator inside your body so if your heart should go into a specific arrhythmia the ICD will shock it back into rhythm; whereas a pacemaker monitors and adjusts the rhythm and speed of your heart; if it is too fast or too slow it will adjust accordingly. This survey is sponsored by the manufacturer of the device, and for everyone who completes the survey the company will be donating £25 to support the work that Arrhythmia Alliance does to improve the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for all those affected by arrhythmias. Dear Linkedin Members: We are being given an opportunity, and UltraToe needs your help. There is a lot of information about the 1stmetatarsophalangeal joint. It’s functionality and pressures have been studied extensively. Xrays and MRI’s of the joint and its disease processes visualized, but under-estimation of the sesamoids are notable. Sesamoids are the tibial plateau to the metatarsal’s femur. There are numerous joint implants but to date, only one has ever treated the metatarsophalangeal-sesamoid complex. The sesamoids, often diseased can be modified as opposed to removal.The Total Toe System was successful for the metatarsal, but its’ shortcomings were at the proximal phalangeal component and alignment challenges. UltraToe was designed to use and build upon it’s predecessor. UltraToe, first metatarsophalangeal joint replacement has been designed and built to garner the confidence of colleagues for Great Toe Joint implantation, and bring that forward to be on par with the very successful total hip and knee replacement. UltraToe employs the same well known and established materials, design concepts and considerations for total joint replacement, on-growth stimulating coatings and dedicated instrumentation proven by time and number at other sites. Proper alignment is essential and in the event of concomitant Hallux Valgus, a frequent finding with degenerative joint disease; Modern Lapidus modifications are important and welcome. Additionally, UltraToe proposes to preserve the medial metatarsal eminence, rich for it’s cortical surface. We are already starting to 👀 see this. I have been a 🤱 neonatal critical care doctor for now over two decades. Understanding physiology has been a mainstay of our therapies, interventions, and care maybe more so than any other non-organ specific medical specialty. Our institution was afforded the opportunity of having a brilliant neonatal cardiac and hemodynamic physiologist/scientist/physician visit to share his wealth of knowledge, Patrick McNamara from the University of Iowa. 🙏 Thanks for visiting and enlightening. He highlighted that our knowledge, understanding, application of basic and important physiological principles underlying fetal and neonatal hemodynamics is diminishing. It is true. In the field of cardiology, I have been witness to such change. When I was a fledging resident at the University of Michigan and requested a ❤️ cardiology consult on a patient, a human cardiologist would arrive to the bedside and magically diagnose a baby with congenital heart disease using a stethoscope, a thorough exam, and astute skills (still in awe of Dr A. Rosenthal). Now when I make the same request, I see an echocardiography machine get wheeled to the bedside by a tech.... and the static/dynamic structural and flow data acquisition begins... later to be interpreted by an echo cardiologist in a separate building, in front of a computer screen...rarely ever visiting the patient bedside. The days of the stethoscope as a fundamental cardiology tool are gone. Is the bedside human interaction gone too? Sadly from my perspective-- technology in the past 2 decades continues to bring us physicians further and further away from our patients. EHR-- say no more. We have more data. But do we have more knowledge and wisdom? We spend less time with patients. Are we providing better care with our tech? In the following article, the authors highlight how reliance on #AI will likely (already has begun) change even the most rigorous of scientists. -the Dunning Kruger effect, a tendency to over-estimate one's knowledge-- leading to incorrect assumptions. -Automation Complacency- we start to trust AI and automation too much and do not double check accuracy. It becomes routine. Think clinical decision support tools. -Illusion of explanatory breadth-- studies will become more focused on issues/problems that AI can be applied to and less focused on those that require more human work (and maybe are harder to study). -Data bias leads to restricted objectivity and perpetuates inequities and disparities. It's estimated to occur in 1 of 62,500 and my brother in law is one of them. It has resulted in years of different consultantions and misdiagnoses. The impact of both conditions can’t be explained, even to his wider family. My brother in law has become is own advocate and has to fight for a diagnosis and to find the right treatment. He is in either high or low pressures which means that he can spend an hour a day upright. Anyne with hyper mobility needs to also be aware of CF leaks, especially if you are having constant headaches. Risk factors for spinal CSF leaks include: Having a previous surgery or procedure on or around the spine. Connective tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which often also cause joint hypermobility and dislocations. Even when no one believes you, there will always be that one clinician who will look further “When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don't expect to see a zebra.” But just sometimes those hooves maybe a Zebra 🦓 I wanted to raise awareness as we head towards rare disease day. #rarediseases #rarediseaseday2024

In 2021, I experienced a stroke that left lasting side effects. And let me tell you, it's been a journey—one filled with challenges. As May approaches, it's time to paint the month purple! Why? Because May is Stroke Awareness Month, and it's an opportunity for all of us to come together to raise awareness about this life-altering condition. You see, strokes are sneaky. They can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. They don't discriminate. And the aftermath? Well, it varies from person to person. Some may recover fully, while others, like myself, live with lingering effects. But regardless of the outcome, one thing remains constant: the importance of awareness. We are always taught that the way to identify a stoke is F.A.S.T. The FAST acronym (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) is a test to quickly identify if someone is having a stroke. Face weakness: Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? Arm weakness: Can the person raise both arms? Speech problems: Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? Time to call 999: if you see any of these signs. But this isn't always the case. When I had a stroke, I lost the ability to finish a thought or a sentence. People were unsure if I was having a stoke. I kept saying "I'm fine. I must not have slept well" Thankfully they didn't listen to me and took me to the hospital. Early Recognition and Treatment: Time is of the essence when it comes to strokes. The quicker someone receives medical attention, the better their chances of recovery. By spreading awareness, we empower individuals to recognise the signs and symptoms of a stroke and take action promptly. Prevention: While some stroke risk factors, such as age and family history, are beyond our control, many others are modifiable. Lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding smoking, can significantly reduce the risk of experiencing a stroke. Education is key to empowering people to make informed decisions about their health. Support and Advocacy: For those of us living with the aftermath of a stroke, awareness brings much-needed support and understanding. It helps break down stigma and misconceptions surrounding stroke survivors. It fosters empathy and encourages society to be more inclusive and accommodating to individuals with disabilities. So, how can you get involved in Make May Purple? Wear purple throughout the month to show your support. Educate yourself and others about the signs and symptoms of stroke. Pioneering Advances in Aortic Dissection Care: The Elective Aortic Dissection Toolkit The Aortic Dissection Charitable Trust, after combined discussions with the Department of Health and Social Care & NHS England has gained approval for an Elective Aortic Dissection Toolkit. This #toolkit represents a significant leap forward in providing comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients suffering from #aorticdissection.   The toolkit emphasises the deployment of specialised multidisciplinary teams along with standardisation of, and improved access to genetic screening for those at risk. These advances promise to improve survival rates, enhance the quality of life for patients, and extend the boundaries of what is possible in #cardiothoracic #surgery.   Many of you will recall the Lunchbox session at the #SCTS annual meeting 2023 in Birmingham, titled "The Future is Here: Towards an Elective Aortic Dissection Toolkit", sponsored by Terumo Aortic. The insights gathered and discussions held during this session were pivotal in shaping TADCT’s proposal.
