I've talked before about Rivian's design language helping carry the brand identity, but it's just insanely awesome to see them constantly take customer feedback into consideration and continuously work to improve the experience. As I dive into the finer details of this refresh, I can see why it's being marketed as "Gen 2" of the R1 electric vehicles! Things like: - Removing roughly 1.5 miles worth of cables in each vehicle by reengineering the electronic control units, going from 17 of them to just 7, reducing about 44 pounds of weight. - Redesigning the charge light bar with 10 new sectional LED lights for improved exterior visibility of your state of charge, also serving as additional hazard lights. - Refreshing the UI to keep things new, while using Epic's Unreal Engine to render all animations, and dual NVIDIA Orin processors for autonomy and image processing. Super excited about the new R1T and R1S, but also still very optimistic and looking forward to R2, R3, and beyond!

Rivian produces 100,000 vehicles After two and a half years in production, the 100,000th Rivian has been made. Since then they've had some big ups and downs, but this is still an extremely impressive achievement. Sure, it's a long way off the 6 million number just posted by Tesla, but they've been at this almost 10 years longer. So, congrats RJ Scaringe and all at team Rivian! Do you know the differences between a legacy "connected vehicle" and a "software-defined vehicle"? 🛻🤖 This short video (15 min) from CNBC is definitely worth a watch if you want to learn more about the Volkswagen and Rivian Joint Venture and if you're a bit fuzzy on what a software-defined EV is. For starters, did you know a typical vehicle has around 70-100 ECUs and Rivian's Gen 2 vehicles have 7? An ECU is like a small computer that controls electrical systems in the vehicle. For legacy automakers, anytime they want to add something, like a massaging seat, the legacy automaker goes to a supplier that provides them with components and a ECU and they add it to the vehicle. The software on that ECU is isolated from other systems and the code written by the supplier. Any updates require going back to that supplier and when you have 80 ECUs from various suppliers, it makes updates extremely challenging! This is not the case for software-defined vehicles, where a major advantage is one centralized platform controlled by the automaker. 😎 This video does a nice job at explaining this advantage and why legacy automakers have struggled to achieve what Rivian has.
