The planet's biggest waterfall is in the ocean. The tallest waterfall you're going to see on land is Angel Falls in Venezuela (above), which has a drop of over 3,200 feet. But that's nothing compared to the Denmark Strait Cataract, which is an underwater waterfall in between Greenland and Iceland formed by the temperature difference in the water on either side of the strait. When the cold water from the east hits the warmer water from the west, it flows underneath the warm water, with a drop of 11,500 feet. 🛑 There are currently only approx. 35-40 Iberian Orcas left in the World. Like every #cetacean, they face issues connected to: - maritime transport - especially ship strikes, underwater noise and other forms of connected #pollution; - fisheries - aggression from fishermen and entanglement to fishing gear. 🐋 But Iberian orcas also face another problem connected to human activity. Recreational boaters are shooting at them. Yes, you read that right, and the picture in your head is, unfortunately, correct. People are shooting whales with guns, and they are often also armed with explosives—more in the video. Unfortunately for our orcas, the place they call home is the Strait of Gibraltar—an area where the mentioned issues are magnified to enormous proportions. While I do not believe there is such a thing as "not our problem" when it comes to #nature #conservation, it's tough to argue that protecting Iberian Orcas is not #European responsibility. Yet, not much is being done on the political level. At ifaw we work on issues like bycatch, ship strikes and underwater noise. "DISTRIBUTION: Occurs throughout the island of Hawai'i from 300 to 2,600 meters (1,000 to 8,530 feet). Based on fossil evidence, they once occurred on Kaua'i, Moloka'i, and 0'ahu." #AOLE ! The #Hawaii #DLNR has been found to inaccurately represent the distribution of an endangered species on their website. Despite their claim that the species occurs only on the island of Hawai'i within specific altitudes, evidence suggests a wider distribution. After personal correspondence with the DLNR, it was confirmed that the information provided on their website is misleading and they actually know it is. (Please see the website blog , search in the blog for the 'io article , within there is the email correspondence with hawaii dlnr ) It is crucial to address these inaccuracies promptly, especially considering the endangered status of the Hawaiian Hawks in the region and the fact that Puna Geothermal Venture is smack dab in the middle of their most critical habitit. The presence of a significant population near the coastline from kapoho to kalapana contradicts the DLNR's published information. Given the potential threats posed by the geothermal drilling plant in the area, it is imperative that the DLNR updates their website to reflect the true distribution of these endangered species. Communiyy Efforts to correct these inaccuracies on the DLNR website are now essential to ensure the protection and conservation of the endangered #Hawaiian #Hawks and other threatened species in the region. Transparency and accuracy in providing information about these species are vital in addressing environmental concerns, such as the impact of the #geothermal drilling plant on their critical habitat.
