Key Learnings from Oral Surgery Rotation This Week 1. Thorough History and Radiographical Assessment  * Essential for successful exodontia.  * Allows appreciation of caries, root form, and bone density. * Medical history to envisage per/post-op complications. E.g., Diabetes can result in poor wound healing. 2. Critical Planning Considerations for Exodontia:  * Focus on the point of application.  * Determine the path of removal. 3. Technique in Tooth Extraction:  * Avoid forcing the tooth out.  * Aim to ease the tooth out gently. 4. Use of Elevators and Forceps:  * Luxate the tooth using elevators.  * Apply forceps in an apical direction. 5. Types of Forces in Tooth Extraction:   *Apical forces, buccal-lingual/palatal force, rotational force, and tractional force.   *Avoid apical force in maxillary molars, especially if the radiograph indicates close proximity to the maxillary sinus.

Wisdom Teeth and Jaw Surgery: Risk Factor or Not ??!! A recent systematic review and meta-analysis explored whether inferior third molars (wisdom teeth) present during sagittal split mandibular ramus osteotomy increase the risk of complications. The study, which followed PRISMA protocol reviewed 19 articles from multiple databases. Key findings revealed no significant difference in complications like unfavourable fractures, infection, or neurosensory disturbance between patients with and without third molars. However, having third molars did result in longer surgery times. These insights suggest that wisdom teeth may not significantly increase surgical risks, though findings should be interpreted with caution due to study variability.
