Don't Get Distracted by Others' Opinions and Advice Only you truly know what's best for you. -- Sometimes, we ask for advice or receive recommendations from others who are speaking from their own experiences. It's important to remember: You are different from the person giving advice. Their path might not be yours. Examples: 💬 "You must work remotely from abroad!" – But maybe you thrive with a stable home base and community. 💫 "This city is amazing, you should work here!" – But perhaps you feel more energized in nature than in a bustling city. 🔶 "If I were you, I’d take this next career step...." – But maybe your unique talents lead you down a different, non-traditional path. Listen to yourself. International Men’s Day my thoughts on strength in Vulnerability Today, on International Men’s Day, I want to reflect on some of the challenges I’ve faced and the importance of resilience and support. Over the last few years I've not had it easy, I’ve been through some tough times—being made redundant twice, once last February and again six years ago. I’ve navigated the grief of losing a baby and the emotional upheaval of divorce to navigate being a single parent to two young girls. These moments have tested me in ways I couldn’t have imagined, but they’ve also taught me the value of community, perseverance, and leaning on good people when life feels overwhelming. Now, I’m in another challenging period. I’ve been out of work for over two months, with lots of the interviews and opportunities not leading to roles. It’s frustrating and disheartening, especially as we approach the holiday season. But one thing I’ve learned is that we don’t have to face these moments alone. The support I’ve had from friends, family, and colleagues over the years has been invaluable. It’s a reminder that even in the toughest of times, there are people willing to lift you up. I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only one navigating challenges right now with 1.34 million people in the UK out of work and only 810,000 job vacancies the job market it floundering. It’s okay to feel vulnerable, to ask for help, and to acknowledge that things are hard. It’s also okay to keep striving, adapting, and looking for the next step forward. Here are some that has worked for me personally: •Define success for yourself→ Know what matters most to you. •Plan your career moves→ Align goals with family timelines if possible. •Be proactive with employers→ Discuss flexible options like remote work. •Set boundaries→Protect family time and avoid burnout. •Invest in support →Childcare, household help, or family can ease the load. •Focus on quality, not quantity→Be present where it matters most. I'm another case of Jimmy journeying to Johannesburg, the African mega city Cosmopolitan, where the opportunity for upward social mobility is at least a probability, a plausible possibility. I only moved here for work, and I would relocate to any other cities nationally or the global world for the same reason, economic opportunities if required 9/10 of the Marketing and Strategy roles I see on LinkedIn, whether full-time, freelance or part-time are based in European Union, the UK, the US or more recently now, the UAE or Saudi Arabia. I enjoyed the below article, I will pen my own experiences. ------ "What the Experts Say Whether or not to relocate for a new role is a big decision both professionally and personally. “There are so many factors to consider,” says Jennifer Petriglieri, an assistant professor at INSEAD and author of the article “Talent Management and the Two Career Couple.” “What’s the opportunity? What’s the longevity [of the job]? And what’s the family situation?” Indeed, the decision is especially complicated if you have a partner and children, says Matthew Bidwell, an associate professor at Wharton whose research focuses on patterns of work and employment. “It’s not just, what does this mean for your career, but what does this mean for our family?” he says. Relocating for a job can often be “great for your personal and professional development,” but it’s also “a risk and a leap into the unknown.” The most important person in this equation is your partner, says Bidwell. “The big issue is what does this move do to your partner’s career?” Will he or she be able to find meaningful work in the new place? If not, how big of a setback will it be? “There’s quite a lot of research showing that people suffer from putting their career on hold,” he says. If your partner won’t have a new job in the new location, “the move brings up other issues because you’re taking them away from their support network.” He points to a certain unhappiness known as trailing spouse syndrome. “You have a new job, new office, and all sorts of new people to meet; your spouse has been dropped in the middle of nowhere and knows no one.” Petriglieri notes that trailing spouses often bear the brunt of move-related household tasks. “It’s tough,” she says. “Whenever you move, for the first six months, you are in the trenches.” And it takes a huge toll. “Research on why relocations fail always points to the unhappiness of the trailing spouse,” she says. Don’t overanalyze Whether or not to relocate is a big decision — but beware of analysis paralysis, overthinking a situation so that a decision is never made, or one is made by default. Try to have perspective. “As you get older, there are very few decisions in life where you don’t feel some ambivalence,” says Petriglieri. “A career is long,” she adds.“We can all afford a few adventures, and we have plenty of time to experiment and explore.” https://lnkd.in/dDx9pZ9z

Find a job that gives your career a boost or one that gives you flexibility to be a parent? I reject that choice. It has to be both. Finding a flexible job as a working parent can feel like searching for a unicorn. The traditional work structure often doesn't leave much wiggle room for the realities of parenthood. First, know that you're facing a common struggle. Many parents crave workplaces that get it. Places where needing to leave early for a sick child or adjusting your schedule for a doctor's appointment isn't met with eye rolls or whispers about "commitment." You deserve to be able to show up for your kids without sacrificing your career aspirations. It's not just about logistics; it's about a supportive culture. Flexible hours and remote work options are great, but true flexibility runs deeper. It's about feeling supported and understood by your boss and colleagues, even when life throws you a curveball. Let's face it, with kids, curveballs are practically a guarantee. Your needs are valid. Your family's situation might require a different kind of flexibility than others. That is ok. You have to find what works for you. It might take some trial and error, but finding that sweet spot where your career and family life can coexist IS possible. I know it is hard. I've been there. Keep searching for that job that fits your family. Don't give up. You are doing great.
