𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 (𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗠) September is National Insider Threat Awareness Month (NITAM), a vital initiative bringing together security professionals and policymakers to address the growing risk of insider threats. First launched in 2019, NITAM emphasizes the need for organizations to focus on education and proactive measures to identify and mitigate insider threats before they cause harm. Insider threats can stem from employees, contractors, or partners who have access to sensitive information. These risks can be intentional, such as data theft or sabotage, or unintentional, such as mishandling sensitive data. Organizations are encouraged to implement continuous monitoring, regular training, and clear reporting channels to reduce these risks. Developing a comprehensive insider threat program not only safeguards against breaches but also strengthens organizational trust and resilience. To protect against insider threats: Conduct regular risk assessments to understand where vulnerabilities exist. Implement role-based access controls to limit exposure to sensitive information. Ensure that incident response plans include protocols for insider threat scenarios. Security is not just about defending from the outside; it's about safeguarding from within.
