Today marks the third year Juneteenth has been recognized as a federal holiday. Established by President Biden on June 17, 2021, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, celebrating the day in 1865 when enslaved individuals in Texas finally learned of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted. This significant day symbolizes freedom and the long, ongoing journey toward equality, inclusivity and justice. #Juneteenth2024 #EndinJustice #CelebrateFreedom #Diversity #Inclusion #RKMC #OneGlobalTeam #MBE #WBE

📢 A change of government could help to promote greater respect and equality for all in our workplaces and local communities. A useful summary below from last week's panel discussion 👇🏻 Thanks to Mushtaq Khan & HDN for organising.
📣 EQUALITIES UNDER A NEW GOVERNMENT 📣 Last week, HDN held a webinar on the upcoming general election and the impacts we expect it to have on equalities policy and practice. The key takeaways centered on ; - socio-economic circumstances as a protected characteristic - a strengthening of the Equality Act - a focus on outcomes - the possible impact of populism and the far right The speakers for the event were: 🔵 Alison Inman OBE CIHCM, Chair of Tpas England 🔵 Lynne N., Director of Leonis Solutions, cofounder of HouseProud-LGBT and Chair of First Brick Housing 🔵 Jeremy Crook OBE, Chief Executive of Action for Race Equality 🔵 Hugh Goulbourne, Lawyer, Labour Party Member and Chair of Kirklees Diversity Equality and Innovation Network. Josh Neary-Pegler, HDN's Research and Policy Lead, has written a blog post highlighting the key takeaways from the speakers' discussion. We already have organisations contacting us to lead a discussion on being ahead of the game in this area and preparing for the changes ahead. Contact us if you want further details. Director and Designer at Cayleigh #Mindset, #inclusion, #diversity, #empowerment # enablement #DeafCommunity #Signlanguage
This. Once more thanks to Puneet Singh Singhal for highlighting this and keeping the conversation alive and at the forefront. We shouldn’t have to jump through government imposed hoops to get access to sign language interpreters. The human rights act gives us the right to equal access to information and the Disability legislation states it’s unlawful to intentionally or unintentionally discriminate against those with disability… yet only yesterday I was told I had to do a lot of hoop jumping in order to gain funding for a one hour session with a life coach which would be beneficial to many in the long term. I was denied said access to my own language of NZSL citing rules (hoops) and lack of funding. I want to ask how much value does the current NZ government, Louise Upston, place on each Deaf community members heads? By default we only get granted $5k per year for job supported interpreting services (been this way for many many years) It costs on average $100 -150 an hour for an interpreter with a minimum of an hour booking. You have to jump through many hoops to prove that the need is higher. I have done this previously and it took a long time right down to the smallest detail required. This is wrong for a group of society to still be treated as un human and fighting for our basic human right to access information in the form we understand. I’ve been denied access to interpter by doctors in hospitals, and healthcare as a result and even a physical injury, had to spend hours and hours on relay calls to get ACC assist and to ask for a face to face meeting with interpreter assist, ignored and treated very poorly by GP practices, told to go use advocacy services to “complain” and yet they themselves refuse to work with Deaf people citing they don’t do calls to NZ relay and then wouldn’t engage either by face to face at a community law office where it could be interpreter assisted. Had a relay call with the Disabilty and Health commission once and they never got back to me. I chased it up and got the same response that they don’t do relay calls. Even those within the legal system and legal government department don’t have the skills to assist us and refuse to. NZ government departments who should know how to work with all communities don’t get trained or taught how to first show respect to Deaf members and secondly know how to provide access to sign language. Putting it bluntly: this makes them in breech of NZ legislation. These are real life lived experiences happening this year alone. The even sadder part is I’m having conversations within our global community networks that it’s not only our government that needs to take note of what really is happening on the front line.

Disabled people don't just "deserve" access to the world- we have a right to it. Denying us the freedom to use a bathroom, enjoy a meal, or be a part of society is a denial of our human rights. Until our rights are honoured, justice and equality remain empty promises. #WeAreBillionStrong #DisabilityInclusion #Accessibility #Ableism #Equity #a11y #Equality #AXSChat

On Human Rights Day, let's reflect on the core values that shape our society: equality, dignity, education, and freedom of expression & association. As individuals and leaders, we must confront and address these rights abuses in our communities. Let's strive for a world where everyone's rights are respected and upheld. #HumanRightsDay #Equality #Dignity #Education #Freedom Sylvia Baloyi Joyce Baloyi
