Are you at the expectations or requirements phase? I'm definitely at the requirements stage and probably need to create and share my own list, albeit I think all of us would have some similarities.
What are YOUR requirements?

During the course of my career,
I have gone from expectations
of the job
of the boss
of the organization
To requirements.
Some of my requirements,
which I commit to give in return:
I require respect for my expertise & time.
I require honesty & transparency.
I require being given credit for my contributions.
I require accountability & an openness to learn together.
I require kindness in how we communicate with one another.
And more.

Whether you are at the beginning, middle, or later half of your career, it's important to realize your worth, what you will tolerate, and what you stand for. Knowing that and sticking to that foundation, makes everything else in life (including work, bosses, friends, and family) easier to manage.

I appreciate this perspective from Mita Mallick about the importance of having requirements. At this point in my career, I require respectful communication.
❌ No more excuses for folks who say they're yelling because they're so passionate. It is never OK to be an asshole; passion is not an excuse.
❌ No more excuses for folks making a pass at you to touch you or go on a date with you when you're only supposed to be there for a work meeting. It is never appropriate to turn a work meeting into a date or sexual harassment.
❌ No more excuses for folks throwing things at you because they had a bad day. It is never OK for you to take out your anger on people at work; go to therapy.
What requirements do you have or would like to have?

“Different is better than better” - Sally Hogshead
I realized early on in my career that having a different profile to most of the people around me (especially others with a similar level of experience) was helpful:
*1st: It meant I didn’t have to try to be better than them (a great relief for me!)
*2nd: It also meant I was more easily noticed (another great relief!)
But I never thought of putting it in the way Sally Hogshead did… Short, catchy, simple…
So, how are you DIFFERENT to your colleagues, your team mates, your “competitors”?
For me, being different started with speaking fluently another language, then having diverse professional experiences…

Jobs and titles come and go. What's truly lasting is the way we treat others. The respect, kindness, and support we offer to our colleagues and teams will be remembered far beyond our job titles. Our legacy is built not on our position, but on how we make others feel, including being honest and giving direction and feedback, even when it involves tough, hard conversations.
This principle holds just as true in our personal lives. Our relationships with family and friends are defined by our actions and the care we show them. While roles may change, the memories and impacts we leave behind endure.

Hard Evidence versus Gut Instinct
I have been told so many times that my gut instinct was "in my imagination".
I kept advocating for a person who justified his bad behaviour on "trauma".
He did not attempt to address his trauma.
I finally got hard evidence that he was telling me lies.
My gut instincts were correct.
I spent hours under pressure to advocate for this person
All that time was not wasted because I learned hard lessons.
look for repeated patterns of behaviour
Charming people can hide hard evidence with lies and excuses for a short time.
Very often they cannot maintain their lies because of their Repeated pattern of behaviour.
Also be wary of others that are charmed by the same person because very often the make excuses for bad behaviour.
hard evidence takes time to collect
gut instinct comes from evidence too. The evidence is lived experience.
we need to acknowledge lived experience as a part of hard evidence
gut instinct is strengthened with rational and logical reflection and thinking
gut instinct based solely on the emotional brain is often flawed.
it takes robust supervision to unpack gut instinct and ensure logical and rational thinking is used.

Early on in my career.
I didn’t trust my gut instinct.
I was interviewing for a role at a big brand name company.
I thought I was being paranoid.
So I ignored all the red flags 🚩
Because I wanted to work there so badly.
I ignored the pit in my stomach telling me something was off about this manager & this team.
It would be one of the most toxic workplaces I ever experienced.
And now I know.
After that experience.
I trust myself.
I trust my gut instinct.
I never ignore that pit in my stomach.
Have you also ignored your gut instincts when it comes to your career?
When did you finally start trusting yourself?
#leadership#inclusion#culture#MitaMallick
Absolutely resonating with this, Mita Mallick.
Early in my career, I rationalized away gut feelings for the sake of opportunity, only to find myself in challenging, sometimes toxic environments. This taught me the crucial lesson of trusting my instincts, even when it feels uncomfortable. Your gut often picks up on cues your conscious mind overlooks.
Thanks for initiating this important dialogue. It’s a reminder of how essential it is to balance our well-being with our career goals.

Love all of the discussion on following your gut! We need to listen to our gut intelligence for sure. However, not to the exclusion of our head, or heart!
Thanks Mita Mallick for initiating this important discussion.
Ideally, we can tap into what has been called a "Whole Body Yes", or inner coherence - where we find deep alignment on our head, heart and gut intelligence.
Here's a big clue.
We also must learn to discern the source of the "voices in our head".
Are these "voices" sourced from our calm, inner sage, or are they fear-based/reactive voices rooted in our past - our inner saboteurs?
I work with leaders and teams on this regularly - sometimes using the Integrative Enneagram, which captures how "balanced" we are - in terms of the 3 intelligence centers, and also identifies our core motives, fears and blindspots. (Yes, we all have blindspots!)
For the last year, I've supplemented this Enneagram work with a free Saboteur Assessment from Positive Intelligence. The concept is simple. Which of the "voices in our head" should we be listening to? In reality, many/most of these voices are self-sabotaging. Different kinds of inner critics, like the Stickler, the Hyper-Vigilant, and the Victim - all of whom cause reactivity, and anxiety, and negatively impact our creativity, relationships, happiness, and success.
So - YES to listening to our gut!
And there's more...
Here's a link to the free Saboteur Assessment - https://lnkd.in/ezUmsMfA
As a certified Positive Intelligence Coach - I also offer a complimentary debrief - if you want to make sense of it! Reach out if you want to learn more.

I won’t abandon myself again.
I learned that lesson the hard way in my career.
I won’t abandon myself again.
Not for any job.
Not for any boss.
Not for any relationship.
Not for any organization.
Not for any promise of a title or promotion.
I won’t stay & stay to be chipped away at.
I won’t stay until my light is gone.
I won’t stay until I lose my voice.
I won’t stay until I lose myself.
Anyone else who has had this revelation?

In today’s world, it’s easy to fall into the trap of measuring our value based on job titles or positions. However, it’s crucial to remember that our true worth goes far beyond these labels.
Embracing your genuine self is a powerful way to navigate your career journey. When you are authentic, you not only attract opportunities that align with your values but also build deeper connections with those around you.
Remember, your skills, experiences, and the unique perspective you bring to the table shape your identity. So, let’s celebrate our individuality and remember that success is not solely about climbing the corporate ladder but about being true to who we are.
Let’s encourage one another to prioritize authenticity and self-worth over titles and positions. After all, it’s our character and contributions that truly define us.
