Exhibitions and conferences. Do you still go to them? People that work in manufacturing industries are busier than ever these days. So we all have to use our time wisely. And that’s one of the reasons I don’t often attend conferences or exhibitions. They can be a bit hit and miss. And if it’s a ‘miss’, then that’s a day wasted. So I only go to a small handful conferences or exhibitions every year, either as an exhibitor or delegate. However, I attended an event yesterday that was definitely a ‘hit’. I had some really interesting, in-depth and insightful conversations at the Sustainable Food Factory exhibition 2024 #SFFE24 It’s a small conference compared to some, but it very much punched above its weight. I also managed to watch several of the presentations – there's some really clever, innovative and inspiring stuff is going on. So for me, it was an extremely good use of a day. Sustainability is really moving forward in food manufacture. It has to. Thank you to everyone involved in the setting up, running and organisation of the event – you did a brilliant job. And of course thanks to everyone I spoke to or who dropped by the HPS Product Recovery Solutions stand and had a chat. 🌍 The recently concluded ANUGA 2023 in Cologne was nothing short of a global marketplace for the food industry. 🌐 But did you know that the event was a melting pot of global cultures as well? 🔍 While it's easy to get captivated by the cutting-edge food packaging on display, the geographical diversity of the exhibitors caught my eye. It's a testament to how the food and packaging industry is a global game, with players from every corner of the world. Want to know which countries led the pack in terms of representation? Read on! 📊 Italy was the undisputed leader, boasting a staggering 996 exhibitors. China followed suit with 679, while Spain and the host country, Germany, were neck and neck with 557 and 552 exhibitors, respectively. Turkey also made a strong showing with 406 participants. 🇮🇹🇨🇳🇪🇸🇩🇪🇹🇷 This international presence not only adds cultural richness to the event but also offers a wide array of packaging innovations—each influenced by its country of origin. From Italy's elegant and sustainable packaging to China's offer of cost-effective innovations the diversity was palpable. 📦 The presence of 113 countries at ANUGA 2023 makes one thing clear: the food industry is increasingly interconnected. It’s an exciting time to be a part of this global community. Let’s continue to learn from each other and grow together. 🤝

Over the course of the past three weeks, we visited five organizations across Europe and gained incredible insights into how each uses data to carry out its missions and shape its future. Our journey began in Dresden, Germany, where we visited a Volkswagen transport factory and learned about how the company integrates data in its journey toward sustainability through the production and transformation of electric vehicles. Volkswagen's data-driven approach was evident in multiple areas of production, including improving the efficiency of its cars and gathering information on its customers' needs. Our next stop was the Airbus operations stationed in Hamburg, Germany. There, we learned about how Airbus prioritizes safety innovation in aviation with its data-driven approaches, such as its strategies to improve the use of the black box in aircraft and its efforts to prevent leading causes of accidents. Our tour of the heineken experience in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, helped us understand how Heineken utilizes data to improve quality control and increase efficiency and sustainability in such a highly competitive beer industry. We discovered that Heineken was the first to use the Lizide refrigeration machine, which allowed for the mechanical production of ice. Our tour of the Chocolate Nation, the largest Belgian chocolate museum in Antwerp, Belgium, was one of a kind. Not only did we learn about the chocolate-making process from beginning to end, but we also tried the various flavors of chocolate the factory produces. Moreover, we found out that the Belgian chocolate industry is working towards decreasing its carbon footprint by investing in solar energy sources. Lastly, we toured the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. UNESCO aims to maintain global and international peace. It uses data to decide which peace-promoting projects related to education, culture, and science to pursue or conclude. How can data be used to shape the future of these organizations and more?
