Product Carbon Footprint x Retail & Construction | Talks about Sustainability, Carbon Calculation, Supply Chain Impact
In a world overflowing with clothing choices, decision-making extends beyond style to the core of our values. But, how can we ensure our choices genuinely resonate with what we stand for? Together with Aaron Nesser and material factors, we took a look at some of the leading undyed, unbleached, organic cotton T-shirts to understand another decision factor—how they compare environmentally with carbon output. As we know, the carbon footprint of T-shirts varies significantly worldwide, influenced by factors such as energy sources and transportation methods. The results were fascinating—definitely take a read through! This is exactly where Arbor shines, offering insights that enable consumers to align their purchases with their personal values. Whether it's opting for undyed clothes, supporting women-led businesses, or choosing products with minimal environmental impact, the power is in your hands and Arbor provides the evidence to guide those choices. #sustainablefashion #sustainability #carbon

It's hard to compare LCA data across fashion brands – everyone does it differently. To change that, we teamed up with Arbor to add carbon footprint data to one of our most popular articles of 2023 comparing six undyed, unbleached t-shirts from top eco-brands. https://lnkd.in/eT-BRj5j Thanks Michael Vereb + Sydney Conway! #biodesignjobs #biodesign #findyourniche #biomaterials #materialfactors #lca #cleanfashion Paul Foulkes-Arellano Cynthia Power Laura Novich Amy Rauen

How do we scale textile-to-textile recycling? There are 8 key success factors identified by the New Cotton Project consortium (of which I have been a part together with the Fashion for Good team for almost 2 years): 1. The wide scale adoption of circular value chains is critical to success 2. Circularity starts with the design process 3. Building and scaling sorting and recycling infrastructure is critical 4. Improving quality and availability of data is essential 5. The need for continuous research and development across the entire value chain 6. Thinking beyond lower impact fibres 7. Citizen engagement 8. Cohesive legislation Is there anything you would like to add to the list?
The EU-funded New Cotton Project has completed its three-and-a-half-year innovation programme, marking the successful implementation of a circular value chain and revealing teachable insights to create a fully circular textile economy. #newcottonproject #fashion #sustainability #sustainablefashion #circularity // Melanie Hughes, Stella McCartney, adidas, H&M https://lnkd.in/g6fqBt2z

British Vogue: 6 Ways The Fashion Industry Can Become More Sustainable In 2024 Dyes become more eco-friendly: "Currently, dyeing is a hugely polluting process – with rivers in countries, like Bangladesh and China, turned completely different colours from the chemical discharge. Luckily, there's a new wave of innovations, such as Colorifix; Living Ink and AIR-INK." Seaweed is the material of the moment: While mushroom-based leathers have long been talked about, seaweed has stayed relatively under the radar – until now. Stella McCartney debuted a new seaweed-based yarn, Kelsun (Keel Labs), on the runway for spring/summer 2024, while brands like Another Tomorrow have partnered with SeaCell, which is created by responsibly harvesting seaweed from the fjords of Iceland. Thanks Emily Chan and British Vogue for the shout out! #trims #dyeing #textile #sustainabilty

Exploring the overlooked potential of reducing overproduction in the fashion industry reveals a dual win for sustainability and profitability. Sanne Schoenmaker's latest analysis on The Interline sheds light on how focusing solely on sustainable materials isn't enough. By addressing the elephant in the room - overproduction - we uncover a staggering opportunity to cut emissions by up to 37% per garment. The key? ✅ Embracing made-to-order and made-to-measure production methods. Not only do these strategies significantly reduce our carbon footprint, but they also promise improved margins through higher sell-through rates and full-price sales. Reducing overproduction is not just an environmental necessity but a strategic economic advantage. Personal Branding and LinkedIn® Presence Expertise | Amazon Bestselling Author | Panel and Podcast Guest | The Good Witch of LinkedIn ✨
"The dress that changes everything" It was introduced in October by Mara Hoffman, and I was reminded of it in a recent recap of NRF '24. Created in partnership with fashion technology company Circ, it uses a lyocell fabric derived from 50% recycled textile waste (which means 50% less raw materials were used in the making of this material than in traditional lyocell.) Even more exciting, at the end of its life, the gown can be sent back to Circ to be recycled into fabric for completely new articles of clothing. Only 35 of these dresses were made, a nod to the concept of small production runs versus mass fast fashion production. Products such as these make my heart happy. But at a price of $1,195 the customer base is limited. Imagine if more brands employed these strategies. We can use better raw materials. We can put more of a focus on recycling, upcycling, and circularity. The technology exists and is getting better and becoming more readily available. But we as consumers have to ask for it. 📸 Mara Hoffman #fashion #sustainability #circularfashion
