New York, Chicago, New York, Oklahoma City. For the longest time, New York was home to the country's tallest building, then it was Chicago's turn, then New York again...next up, Oklahoma City. It could happen if the city allows it. https://lnkd.in/eBDbSdPC #design #architecture #architecturaldesign #skyscrapper #tallestbuilding #construction #realestate

"It’s a different framework of thinking. It pushes you to do things that you wouldn’t have thought to do. It pushes you to evaluate spaces that you thought you didn’t like to see if you can make them work in a way that you do like. How little can I do to make this work?" Thought-provoking interview with architect Julie Eizenberg on the the importance of retrofitting and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. At SFN we agree that working under heritage constraints can be challenging but one that our team relishes in our commercial and residential construction projects. Often those buildings become your most memorable work. Via: ArchitectureAU #sfnbuild #residentialbuilders #commercialbuilders #heritage #adaptivereuse

Wise thoughts of Amos Goldreich on value of architecture and ‘more’ it does beyond building. What’s your take on architecture’s ’more’ beyond building?
Changing people’s lives in a positive way through architecture and design | Founder and Creative Director of Tamart
Why Architecture is More Than Just a Building A building is not just a structure. It's a vessel for human activity, an embodiment of our values, and an instrument of societal change. Every piece of architecture tells a story. When we think about the great architects of the past, it’s often their vision for how people live and interact that made them legendary. Their designs didn't just create beautiful buildings - they changed how people lived their lives. As architects, we're tasked with designing spaces that inspire, engage and uplift the communities they serve. We need to understand the nuances of every project, the needs of the end users and above all, create spaces that enhance wellbeing. Architecture serves a multitude of functions beyond physical shelter. It can help us reconnect with nature through biophilic design principles, promote wellbeing via thoughtful lighting and space planning or even instigate social change through inclusive design principles. Remember, we don’t simply design buildings - we shape experiences.

Principal Donald Schmitt is featured in an interview with Andrea-Jo Wilson for Foyer magazine, published by Art Gallery of Ontario. They discuss how he came to pursue a career in architecture, where he goes for inspiration, and his approach to sustainability – designing buildings to be much like little energy plants unto themselves, and re-energizing older buildings to find more appropriate uses for them. When asked, to what does he credit his many achievements, it’s not to his eyes he points. But his ears. “Good #architecture is about being a good listener. Listening, not just to the quantitative needs – seven of these, three of that, a roof, a window – but the more sensitive, qualitative goals. They are the important bits, the things that can allow a building to transcend its practical program, its programmatic requirements. It can give you the clues to making a more inspired environment.” Read more Donald Schmitt’s interview for Foyer. https://lnkd.in/dpZ8Yev4

As a Placemaker with over 50 years of experience, I've learned that creating a sense of place is challenging and complex. Before putting any major urban project in place, I always prioritize understanding what the market is looking for. Deep market research and engaging with the community are essential to satisfy potential customers and patrons. Testing architectural ideas before commencing a project has been a critical factor in my success. I've never had community pushback on any planning application during my career; mostly great support. Though almost everyone has a view on architecture, unlike Europeans, few people in Australia can name the architects of prominent urban projects or buildings. The acid test of good design in architecture is time. Design that travels well in 10 or 20 years generally has better long-term capital growth than market growth. Inclusive design is the biggest challenge in major urban residential projects. It is crucial to make them appealing to a wide range of people in the community. #architecture #design #communityengagement #placemaking #marketresearch #inclusiveurbanprojects

Discover Ensemble: a unique blend of 31 dwelling units on a mid-block parcel in Altadore. Bisected by a utility right-of-way, the design solution was to embrace the site’s undevelopable land and create a wide pedestrian corridor framed by two separate buildings. The resulting space creates visual interest and connectivity, allowing for lush landscaping from street to site. Ensemble aligns with the Municipal Development Plan’s compact growth goals, diversifying housing options and fostering a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere on 33 and 34 Avenue SW. Additional design considerations include transitional setbacks and stepbacks to reduce mass and maintain a thoughtful interface with neighbouring properties. This thought-provoking article explores the current state of American architecture and the factors that have led us to our current design predicament. From suburban sprawl and the dominance of the car to standardization and a lack of regionalism and innovation, the article dives deep into the root causes of the issue. One interesting point made is the question of whether college campuses are the last bastion of American identity. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in architecture and design! #AmericanArchitecture #Design #CollegeCampusIdentity #architecture #suburbs #architects #urbandesign #urbanplanning #planning #zoning https://lnkd.in/gzpm-hR2

"Custom home" sounds expensive, doesn't it? But it doesn't have to be as expensive as you may think. While construction costs are large, we search for ways to ensure you get the best possible value from what will become your largest asset. How do we find ways to reduce construction and other costs? ⭐ Work with nonstandard plots of land that cost less to buy. ⭐ Build with a smaller footprint so all costs are reduced. ⭐ Design so you don't notice the smaller footprint. As creative problem solvers, one of the things we do best is find beautiful ways to build practical homes.
