Have you heard about EBS? 👀 Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS) are a key component in the safe disposal of high-level radioactive waste. EBS are designed to ensure long-term isolation of radioactive materials from the environment, minimizing any risk of radioactive release over thousands of years. EBS work together with the natural barriers, like for example in Olkiluoto, almost 450 meters of stable bedrock. The core of EBS include durable canisters that encapsulate the spent fuel, often made from materials like copper or steel, selected for their corrosion resistance and strength. These canisters are placed in underground deposition holes surrounded by a buffer material, like bentonite clay, which acts as a secondary barrier. Bentonite is chosen for its swelling properties when exposed to moisture, effectively sealing gaps and preventing water flows. 💧 The backfill and sealing of the disposal tunnels further reinforce the containment. Together with the surrounding natural barrier, these engineered barriers are designed to withstand natural processes such as corrosion due to groundwater chemistry, groundwater movement and geological shifts over millennia. By combining engineered solutions with the natural protection EBS ensure that radioactive waste remains safely isolated from the biosphere until its radioactivity declines to harmless levels. Water ingress in piping systems pose significant challenges for industries worldwide. Not only does it increase heat loss, but it also causes aggressive CUI, leading to operational inefficiencies and safety concerns. The solution is called CR-Tech™ – a non-toxic corrosion inhibitor. It acts as a shield against CUI by controlled release of inhibitor chemicals to ingressing water. When activated by water, the inhibitor forms a protective layer on the pipe’s outer wall – shielding it from Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI). This innovative technology not only mitigates corrosion but also enhances the longevity and performance of insulation systems. Energy transition...!! Nitrogen (NOx) and sulfur (SO) oxides and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the primary concern related to the pyro process of clinker production, an intermediate product and raw material for Portland cement. These gases have a direct impact as atmospheric pollutants, participating in the greenhouse effect, acid rains, and photochemical contamination. Since the middle of the 20th century, the cement industry using polluted air control systems, such as filters (electrostatic and bag filters), opacimeters, and gas analyzers. In addition, combustion technology has been developing more efficient burners that allow the use of different fuels, including gaseous ones, such as natural gas. Currently, the cement industry is undergoing its most relevant energy transition to eliminate carbon emissions based on renewable technologies. In this sense, high investments are made in research and development to achieve this goal in three aspects: ✅ Raw materials; replace or decrease the limestone content as the primary raw material; ✅ Fuels, replace fossil fuels with other clean energy sources; ✅ Reduce/eliminate emissions by capturing, transforming, or reusing oxidizing gases. That doesn't necessarily mean discontinuing the combustion process. Interestingly, the hydraulic mortar of the ancient Romans included calcined clay, recycled ceramic material, and slow combustion in its composition. Although the objective was not ecological, if we analyze it carefully, we will see that the Romans had an ecologically friendly process, similar to several actions applied by the modern cement industry.
