Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. In 2017, I embarked on my first internship in construction with Zachry Construction Corporation. It was an incredibly eye-opening and rewarding experience. From day one, I knew the opportunities would push me out of my comfort zone. I was 18 and a freshman attending Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) studying concrete industry management CIM MTSU. One of the first things I learned was the importance of teamwork. Construction projects are complex endeavors that require seamless collaboration between various teams and departments. Working with experienced professionals, I quickly grasped the significance of effective communication and coordination. The unity and purpose of the construction site were fascinating. I knew I had discovered my purpose and passion. Challenges were never in short supply during my internship, which made it so beneficial. Whether dealing with unexpected weather conditions, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, or solving logistical puzzles, every day presented a new set of hurdles. These challenges not only tested my problem-solving skills but also taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience in the construction industry. Reflecting on my experience with Zachry, I can confidently say that it provided invaluable lessons and experiences. Thank you, Zachry, for being a part of building me! WE ALL NEED THAT PUSH! Not stepping out of one's comfort zone can feel so easy many times. As sweet as it sounds, the convenience of doing the same thing over and over can be an hindrance to doing or learning new things. Looking back at when I started my #internship in February and comparing it to now, the internship has really been a period of learning a lot. Many things I didn't even know I was capable of doing - I did them and even became better at them. Thanks to the push from the tasks assigned to me. Permit me to say "I take new tasks with joy😊🤭"! There are a lot of beautiful things we discover we are capable of when we get of our comfort zone and focus on being better every time. We are continuing our Careers in Construction Month Series with a highlight of what its like to be a Project Engineer! Check out what Zachary had to say about his construction journey: 1. How did you get into the construction industry? I got into the construction industry at a young age. My parents were custom house builders so I was always around the building process and helping out where I could. It wasn’t until college that I knew I want to go into the transportation industry. Those classes at ASU were very interesting to me and eventually I got an internship with Pulice Construction, Inc. 2. What is something that you enjoy about the industry or about your position? My favorite thing about what we do is that everyday is different. There isn’t a single day that goes by that is identical. We are always trying to find solutions to problems or finding different ways to do activities more efficiently. 3. What advice would you give to someone interested in a career in construction? If you ask Matthew McKenna what his hobbies are, he’ll likely tell you studying. Matt just earned his Masters of Engineering Degree from the University of California, Riverside, taking the classes online, one per quarter, over the last two years.   “The ability to go online, at my own pace, was important to me,” Matt says. “I’m in the field a lot, so I was looking for that type of flexibility. I was fortunate to receive a lot of support from Loureiro while I was earning my Masters.”   Matt’s journey to Loureiro started at a career fair at the University of Connecticut during his senior year. Matt, who had a love for math and science growing up, initially entered UConn as a biomedical engineering major, switching to environmental engineering after his first semester. His path was confirmed as he embarked on a series of internships during his junior and senior years.   “I think for anyone in school studying engineering, it’s important to get as many internships as you can in a variety of fields,” Matt says. “Even with environmental engineering, there are a lot of different paths. I did internships for both the state / federal sector and within industrial environments. Internship Opportunities

Are you interested in an internship with the Department of Water Resources? Kazuaki Hatano, a DWR intern is nearing his completion of his internship and has a few words to share of his internship experience! "First of all, I wanted to thank Samantha Blackwood for the opportunity at DWR. I have certainly learned a lot about what the engineers do at the Department of Water Resources. Since I am an engineer major, it has really helped doing this internship. Simple things such as reading engineering maps, what the road to an engineer looks like, and understanding how meetings are held were just a few of the things that I have learned that really helps me stay motivated for continuing with my education in engineering.   A lot of this program is more of what you want to get out of it. I always came in the office at least once a week to ask specific questions that gets me a better understanding of what an engineer does. It really helps with my future because not only is this good experience as a first-year student, but it also can really bolster my resume for the next school year. I also have learned a lot about the Delta Conveyance Project and some of the future opportunities that I can find further down the line."
