I've mentored fourth-year students and young professionals, and they all ask me the same question: 'What should I be? And it always revolves around, 'I don't like this subject,' or 'I heard there is good money in that.' They think choosing a career is a binary choice. Good or bad. And it's funny because we are living in the most amazing times, as entire university curriculums are virtually online for free. When I was in engineering school, I wanted to be a demolition engineer because it looked cool to blow up apartment buildings. Then I wanted to be a seismic engineer and went to California, but I didn't like it. I ended up in geotechnical engineering, which led me to oil & gas. In business school, I was absolutely sure I wanted to be a management consultant, but that didn't align with what I truly wanted. People think once they choose a path, that's it—they are stuck with it, or as if it will be a waste of time. I get it... It's a difficult decision, but making any decision is better than making no decision. If there is one thing I've learned during this process, it is that there are no bad decisions in professional career paths. Every path you take will get you to your next thing. Teaches you skills and pretty good lessons. It's our absolute convictions that will help us validate our bets in life. So don't ask what you should be, ask how you can thrive in what's next.

I just completed Engineers Without Borders UK's Globally Responsible Engineering on Forage (urn:li:organization:68514998). In the simulation I: * Completed a job simulation involving responsible engineering for Engineers @Without Borders UK * Planned inclusive co-design sessions for a sensitive project * Analyzed inmate and staff perspectives to inform design decisions  * Developed effective engagement strategies for diverse stakeholders * Reviewed ethical arguments in engineering decisions * Drafted a commencement speech emphasizing responsible engineering * Emphasized practical implementation of responsible engineering 📌 This experience has sharpened my approach to engineering by focusing on responsible and sustainable solutions that prioritize community well-being and environmental integrity. I encourage every professional out there to integrate globally responsible practices into their work. "As a young, female engineer it was important to me to have an industry-recognised qualification to demonstrate to others my position and to back-up the skills and experience I was gaining. It was also important to my employers, as it enables them to demonstrate they employ competent engineers and provide evidence of that for tenders or contract bids." In what ways has registration benefitted your career? "For me, the Engineering Council provides a level playing field across the engineering sectors. Within the engineering community there is of course variance specialism to specialism, but Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), and Chartered Engineer (CEng) are understood by a structural engineer, a chemical engineer and a civil engineer. Having professional registration has allowed me to progress through internal promotions and seek new roles when I have chosen to move employer, it has also provided evidence of competency whenhttps://buff.ly/46k1bj1 bidding for projects or contracts." How does your employer benefit from your professional registration? I am excited to share that I have obtained a new certification: Globally Responsible Engineering Job Simulation from Forage! I highly recommend the program since it is very balanced and engaging! A sufficiently large number of authoritative materials are offered to study the issue before completing the task. You can delve into social issues and topics that may be unusual. Such a background encourages critical thinking and a broader perspective, which can be valuable in various aspects of the job. For instance, one assignment asks you to write a letter explaining the relationship between engineering and sustainability. It inspired me to inform the people around me on a larger scale and also helped me focus on useful exchange of experience. The longest challenge focuses on research and survey methods and explores the arguments for and against controversial prison designs. This kind of practical experience is invaluable in preparing for complex career challenges.

🧠 Fire engineers, are you biased? 🧠 I was chatting today with a few colleagues about how we can further graduate development within OFR Consultants. Aside from the usual 🔥 consulting 101, I feel we have a responsibility to help people recognise and confront bias in engineering decision making, so I directed my colleagues to a few pieces of work by human behaviour boffins, like Michael Kinsey. 📜 This included a piece of work that I was invited to contribute to in collaboration with Steve Gwynne and Max Kinateder, where we dived into the intricacies of decision-making, shining a spotlight on the prevalent cognitive biases that might hamper fire engineer decisions. Awareness is the first step towards improvement. By understanding and acknowledging these biases, we can foster better, more informed decision-making. Young Faces of the Engineering Profession in Trinidad and Tobago “Young Faces of the Engineering Profession in Trinidad and Tobago” is an upcoming series of interviews of Young Registrants of the Board of Engineering of Trinidad and Tobago. These interviews are aim to explore the newly Registered Professional Engineer's background, experience, approach to engineering, and their career aspirations. It is hoped that the career achievements and the aspiration of these young engineers to be among the best industry professionals will serve to inspire other young engineers to follow the part towards professional status through Board Certification, which provides recognition of engineers who have demonstrated knowledge, experience and competency in a specific specialty area, bringing more value to employers, clients, and the public.
