Over the last few decades, the United States Department of Defense's global health engagement strategy has evolved to better support the operational medical capability requirements of international allies and partners. The strategy has evolved from providing assistance and supplies to “more sustained efforts that support building partner nation medical capacity and capabilities,” according to a recent article published in the BMJ Military Health Journal, by experts in the Military Health System. “Future efforts will increasingly focus on global health security, shared military medical readiness and enhancing interoperability between allies and partners,” according to the journal article. Terrifying numbers that do not take into account the actual full impact. What the numbers do not show are trained verse untrained personnel, personnel on administrative or retirement leave and personnel on medical leave. What really needs to be known is the number of current operationally deployable (medically fit, trained) personnel in the Canadian Armed Forces….(that number will prove to be terrifying) The CAF based on the current numbers is in a greater state of decline than previously identified. The policies adopted of late and the promise of taking care of our people as outlined in the Liberal Defence Policy (Strong Secure and Engaged) have proven to be failures. Time to start truly taking care of our serving personnel…medical, housing, pay, equipment, respect…etc

The #DepartmentofDefense is on a mission to get the right people into the right #military hospital or clinic at the right time, both medical staff and patients. On Dec. 6, 2023, the Deputy Secretary of Defense signed a memo directing the stabilization of the Military Health System. The memo requires that the MHS add capacity to reattract patients and beneficiaries, improve access to care in military hospitals and clinics, and increase opportunities to sustain military clinical readiness for #medicalforces. There is a clear need to stabilize the MHS. The realignment of medical personnel, coupled with a volatile #healthcare economy in the past three years, created challenges to care for beneficiaries and affected the ability to efficiently generate and sustain medically ready and ready #medical forces. There’s a medical provider shortage in the military Billets have been eliminated and the recruiting crisis cannot keep up with the number of providers who are retiring….and so available resources are beginning to decline. This burns a hole in my heart… Our warfighters, #woundedwarriors, and their families, will suffer the consequences. This could lead to delays in accessing healthcare services, longer wait times for appointments, limited availability of specialists, and reduced clinic hours, resulting in delayed diagnoses, treatment, and follow-up care for medical conditions. As a result, overworked medical staff may experience burnout, potentially compromising the quality of care delivered to patients….and shortages of specialized providers such as mental health professionals may limit the range of treatment options available Medical care is a key component to performance restoration and getting our troops back in the fight. (medical readiness to mission readiness) Not having ample and adequate access to healthcare will not only impact #warfighter health (and even family readiness), but may result in degradation of capabilities and overall operational readiness. What’s the best solution? Will civilian providers be approved? Will access to off-base care be granted? What does the current military medical community think?
