RMI has been supporting Vineyard Wind with medical service provision since 2023. For offshore wind contractors Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) are the gold standard for medical clearances. However, with no OEUK registered doctors within hundreds of miles of the Vineyard Wind site, we used our extensive experience in offshore wind, oil and gas to set up remote screening. We quickly established an assessment center locally in New Bedford, MA, that ultimately ensured we were able to deliver high-quality medical exams while avoiding costly and time-consuming logistics for the contractors. These critical areas can be broadly categorized into three sections: 🎯 Source and Supply: 💡 Main Gas Station: This area houses the main supply tanks or connections for bulk gases like oxygen and nitrous oxide. Redundancy is crucial here, with backup systems or connections to ensure uninterrupted supply. 💡 Manifold Rooms: These rooms house manifolds that regulate gas pressure and flow for different zones within the hospital. Automatic changeover systems within manifolds are critical to prevent disruptions during cylinder changes. 💡 Vacuum Stations: Similar to gas supply, maintaining a reliable vacuum is essential for procedures and patient care. Redundancy and proper maintenance of vacuum pumps are crucial. 🎯 Distribution Network: 💡 Piping System: The entire network of copper pipes needs meticulous attention. Material quality, proper installation (including proper cleaning and degreasing), and leak checks are vital to prevent contamination and ensure gas flow integrity. 💡 Isolation Valves: These valves allow specific sections of the pipeline to be shut down for maintenance or repairs without impacting the entire system. Happy Wednesday O&M Wind turbine technicians have 2 roles. Their secondary role is that of emergency first responder. They are solely responsible for the management of a medical rescue scenario from the turbine environment. The duty holder is responsible to ensure that their wind techs are competent to deal with the most complex of medical and rescue scenarios. That’s the reason, in turbine, realistic, medical rescue training is essential. To ensure competence, Duty Holders need to carry out a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk, of all foreseeable medical rescue scenarios. From that risk assessment, an equipment and then training needs analysis should be done. The last stage would be to carry out gap analysis. This is to identify the gap between the required training and that delivered in generic industry recognised training. Gap training, to address identified training needs, should then be delivered and recorded. Duty holders need to facilitate the maintenance of competence. This would require Duty holder to provide facilities, equipment, and opportunity to maintain those skills to remain compliant.
