Positive!!!! Decision makers in existing businesses need to create jobsites that move away from top-down “be tough” mentality to ground-up ”how can we collaborate” mentality. We either make room for it to happen “with us” or get pushed out as emerging clients choose to work with those that value their ethics (that’s this next generation). Existing businesses have a closing window to attract the women and BIPOC that will lead the incoming construction workforce. They want to work… but the “why” we work has to be a lot more than making money for their employers.

Vocational training in trades like welding will always be a solid path to follow. If you learn like I do, then the hands on approach is something to consider.

Lots of interesting stats in this The Wall Street Journal piece on the rise of Gen Zers entering the trades, thanks largely to rising compensation and the erosion of a college degree's ROI. • Enrollment in vocational-focused community colleges grew by 16% last year • HVAC and car maintenance students increased 7% • Building trade school enrollees increased 23% • According to ADP, 2022 median pay for new construction hires rose 5.1% vs. 2.7% for those in professional services, the fourth year in a row that new hire pay in construction eclipsed compensation in a number of sectors occupied by knowledge workers. There's something else that's briefly acknowledged in the article, but deserving of more attention: trade work, more commonly known as "blue collar work", has been stigmatized for decades as a less prestigious or respectful form of employment. Aside from being completely false and misguided, this belief has had a deleterious effect on American politics and society. Overall, I think the increase in trade workers is a very promising trend for this country. cc: Scott Galloway

Highly Experienced Master Electro/Mechanical Technician with multi-trade experience including; machine design - build and implementation.
Considering todays choices, people acquiring a degree are finding it difficult to gain employment in today’s market. You can’t depend on Biden to pay off your student loan and they shouldn’t depend on retirees to foot your student loan either because they are on a fixed income and usually are at or near poverty. Soo, these giveaways from today’s government are going to fall on the shoulders of the upcoming generations to pay. Let’s see, in today’s economy a person and or family will need to gross over $100k a year to afford a house and raising a family. Working in a trade, or, several trades, as I have done throughout my life, I was always needed by an employer but, unfortunately, the employers were never willing to compensate for the knowledge which was gained and always lowballed the wage. Maybe, it is the ignorance of the hiring managers and the HR staff for not truly knowing the knowledge, learned skills and hands-on abilities of a trade person. This ignorance can be traced back to their professors who have no hands-on knowledge but do have “book knowledge” and usually in one subject matter. Now, these people are pushing to learn a trade. To cover their asses.

By the time an executive gets to me, they have "should" on themselves for decades. I should go to college. I should work for that big brand name company. I should go after that promotion. Now these executives are in their 50's, they look back on a highly successful career and wonder what they should be doing next. The path they "should" take for themselves is not always clear. Or, they look back and realized they did not prioritize other aspects of their life and have some regret. Or, they took that job and realized what they "should" do is more like shouldn't. The job before this one was really their happy place. What if we broke the "should" mold with our kids? What if we opened them up to other alternatives to college? What if we focused more on what gives them lifelong joy vs. pressure to climb up the next rung of the ladder? Heck, let's show them a different ladder. I know a lot of trades people on the top of the financial success ladder and they are very happy! Thanks Jim Aaron for sharing this article! Thanks Steve Bettwy for making me aware of this trend.
