Helping hospitals find missing revenue | Revenue Cycle Automation Technology & Services | Healthcare Interoperability | Regional Vice President @ Streamline Health
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson You've heard this quote before. It paints a brutal mental picture of the idea that even our best plans and strategies often get abandoned in the face of adversity. This is often the case in business. The perfect process that operates with perfect efficiency one day grinds to a halt the next day at the departure of a key resource, or when a hardware upgrade hits a snag, or a regulatory requirement gets implemented that adversely impacts the process. What then? Hospitals know about this all too well. Loss of revenues and margin from increased payer denials, staffing shortages, sicker patient populations, cybersecurity risks have led healthcare providers to make tough operational choices that have no clear winning solution. In some of those instances hospitals have chosen to stop investing in the Revenue Integrity processes that ensure they are collecting the revenues for the services they provide. That may mean no longer reconciling charges at the department level for a high volume, high dollar, or high complexity department. It may mean cutting auditors in coding, resulting in fewer patient encounters being reviewed for DRG accuracy. It may mean turning over the entirety of Revenue Cycle operations to third parties to manage with almost complete autonomy and little oversight. During my time at Streamline Health, I have watched as eValuator and RevID have given hospitals and health systems the ability to stay in the ring and face these challenges head-on. By leveraging Streamline's pre-bill Revenue Integrity automation tools to create system-wide charge reconciliation workflows and efficient DRG auditing, hospitals can do more with existing resources while adding to the improve the bottom line. Many hospitals and health systems have already trusted Streamline Health to sure up their plans so that they can win in the face of adversity. Healthcare technology sales involve selling products, services, or solutions specifically designed for the healthcare industry. This field is highly specialized and requires a deep understanding of both healthcare operations and technology. As per my experience, here are some key aspects to consider when engaging in healthcare technology sales: Understanding the Healthcare Landscape 1. **Industry Knowledge**: Gain a comprehensive understanding of healthcare providers (hospitals, clinics, nursing homes), payers (insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid), and regulatory bodies (FDA, HIPAA). 2. **Challenges and Pain Points**: Identify common challenges in healthcare such as regulatory compliance, patient data security, operational efficiency, and patient care quality. 3. **Technology Integration**: Be familiar with how healthcare technologies integrate with existing systems (Electronic Health Records - EHRs, Practice Management Systems - PMS, etc.) and how they impact workflows. ### Tailoring Solutions 1. **Customization**: Healthcare institutions have diverse needs. Tailor your solutions to address specific pain points and enhance operational efficiency, patient care, or regulatory compliance. 2. **Demonstration of Value**: Clearly articulate how your technology solution improves patient outcomes, reduces costs, increases revenue, or enhances patient satisfaction. 3. **ROI Calculation**: Provide compelling ROI calculations and case studies to demonstrate the financial benefits of adopting your technology. Healthcare stakeholders often need to justify investments in terms of financial return. ### Building Relationships 1. **Stakeholder Engagement**: Engage with key stakeholders including clinicians, IT professionals, administrators, and financial decision-makers. Understand their perspectives and address their concerns. 2. **Long Sales Cycles**: Recognize that healthcare technology sales often involve long sales cycles due to regulatory approvals, budgeting cycles, and stakeholder buy-in processes. Develop strategies for managing these extended timelines. 3. **Trust and Credibility**: Establish trust and credibility by showcasing success stories, testimonials, and partnerships with reputable healthcare organizations. Compliance with industry standards and regulations is also crucial. ### Compliance and Security 1. **HIPAA Compliance**: Ensure that your products and services comply with HIPAA regulations regarding patient data privacy and security. 2. **Data Security**: Address concerns related to data security, encryption, and protection against cyber threats. Healthcare organizations prioritize security due to the sensitive nature of patient information.
