Find out how we're helping to save lives this International Day of Education 👇 Every year, drowning claims the lives of over 300,000 people globally. Drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years.* Education is key to tackling the drowning problem, as many of these deaths are preventable. Together with Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth, we hosted a knowledge sharing event to increase awareness and encourage action on the need to integrate drowning prevention interventions in education initiatives. Guests heard about the global context of drowning prevention and its links to education. We showcased stories of success to inspire attendees and highlighted the World Health Organization's Global Status Report (for drowning prevention) and its links to education and youth. An event highlight was a presentation from The Panje Project on the integration of water safety education into Zanzibar's national curriculum. A panel discussion and networking space allowed for questions to be asked and connections to be made. One key question was, how can we integrate water safety into schools? Only by talking together can solutions be found. And it's only together that we can save every one. * Stat: National Water Safety Forum 2023 #RNLI #InternationalDayOfEducation #DrowningPrevention

A chronic water supply deficit due to the lack of local sources and an arid climate is severely impacting communities, particularly children and adolescents in the public education system, in Nueva Esparta State, Venezuela. It’s estimated that 82% of the population has restricted access to water, significantly higher than the national average of 69%. Reflecting this regional trend, none of the 195 schools in the state provides safe drinking water or adequate sanitation facilities for teachers and students. This can cause common diseases such as diarrhoea and helminth infections among students, contributing to school absenteeism. To help address this growing crisis, MENTOR launched the "Margagüita, Water as a Source of Life" project in five educational institutions in Arismendi, Mariño, and Península de Macanao municipalities in July 2024, supported by COSUDE (Swiss Development Cooperation) This project aims to enhance water, sanitation and hygiene by installing water filtration systems, repairing sanitary infrastructure with dedicated areas for menstrual hygiene, and developing a training programmes for the educational community, including students, parents, teachers, and school staff. The goal is to reduce waterborne diseases, decrease school absenteeism, and promote a healthier environment for learning. By the end of the project, we aim to have: 💧 Installed functional water filtration systems in five schools. 💧 Restored sanitary units with menstrual hygiene facilities in five schools. 💧 Reach 3,132 children and adolescents through WASH improvements. 💧 In total, reached over 10,000 people. #Venezuela #water #hygiene #sanitation #schools #community #diseasecontrol #WASH #waterbornediseases #humanitarian

As we count down 10 days to World Toilet Day 2024, today’s message is focused on the critical need for toilets in schools and the profound impact on students’ well-being, learning, and health. Access to clean, safe toilets isn’t just a matter of hygiene—it’s essential for dignity, privacy, and equal opportunity in education. In Ethiopia, many schools still lack adequate sanitation facilities. This affects not only health but also attendance, especially among girls who often miss classes or drop out entirely due to a lack of privacy. Improved school sanitation can reduce disease, increase attendance, and create a safer, more inclusive learning environment. Let’s work together to ensure every school in Ethiopia has access to clean, safe toilets. Toilets are a place for peace, and a vital part of nurturing healthy, educated future generations.

Safe Water, Thriving Lives This Season of Promise, we’re celebrating the life-changing impact of safe water in schools. At Pencils of Promise, we know that education thrives when basic needs are met, and access to clean water is at the heart of healthy, successful communities. How we’re making an impact: Ghana: Over 200 LifeStraw Filters distributed to 83 schools, ensuring nearly 33,000 students have safe drinking water. Guatemala: 140 handwashing stations and 370 water filters installed, benefiting 76,000 students and 750 teachers. Laos: Sustainable water filters in 62 schools have transformed the lives of over 11,000 students. But it’s about more than just clean water. Our WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programming teaches life-saving hygiene practices, builds safe environments for girls to stay in school, and empowers communities to maintain these vital resources for the future. This season, let’s give the gift that transforms education. Click below to support safe water initiatives for children in Ghana, Guatemala, and Laos. 🎒 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗔: 𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 🚸 As parents across South Africa drop off their precious children for another school year, it’s crucial to remember that school safety is more than just a concept - 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. While beautiful gardens, clean premises, and modern sports fields are lovely, they don’t guarantee a safe and healthy environment. Every school, whether public or private, is legally bound to adhere to safety regulations, codes, and duties under South African law, such as: • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁 (𝗢𝗛𝗦𝗔): Mandates safe environments for all. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝗰𝘁 (𝗦𝗔𝗦𝗔): Outlines responsibilities for school governing bodies to ensure student safety. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹. It must be a way of work, ingrained in every decision and action, to avoid or minimize incidents and respond appropriately when they occur. Unfortunately, incidents can happen when we assume schools are safe without verifying. Our family knows this firsthand. Let our daughter’s story serve as a reminder to ask the hard questions: ✅ Are fire safety measures in place and up to date? ✅ Is there a trained first aid team on-site? ✅ Are health and safety protocols regularly reviewed and tested? ✅ Is the school equipped with the necessary equipment to handle emergencies? As parents, we owe it to our children to be proactive. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸, 𝗮𝘀𝗸, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱’𝘀 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆. A beautiful campus is not enough, there must be robust measures to prevent and respond to emergencies. Together, by educating ourselves we can foster safer schools for every learner in South Africa. 🌟 To learn more about our daughter's journey to recovery click here >>https://lnkd.in/eCd9EHix #SchoolSafety #Parenting #SouthAfrica #HealthAndSafety

During the first quarter of this year, I participated in a funded research project as a research assistant and we had to recruit pupils in government-owned primary schools in Ibadan as our study participants. This research made me reach into the deepest parts of Ibadan, places I never dreamed existed or thought I could ever be. In the areas, some of the conditions of facilities in the schools we used as our study locations were in a sorry state and not befitting for learning. While I'm still working with some people on getting grants that will be adequate enough to solve the problem of water supply in these schools, I feel the need to first work with schools who still have access to water to a certain extent but lacking in hygiene and sanitation services. This is what prompts me to carry out this personal project "WASH in SCHOOLS", where you and I can work together to provide schools with hygiene facilities and supplies such as locally-made hand washing stations with kits, water purifiers, toilet cleansers, disinfectants and menstrual care supplies. All of these would help us promote health and well-being of these pupils and reduce absenteeism that occur as a result of lack of these resources. Kindly partner with us to make this project a reality. Together we can give these children the life they deserve. #happychildrensday #waterforall #cleanwaterandsanitation #menstrualhygiene #sdg3 #sdg4 #sdg6

Would you send your child to school without a toilet? For billions of people around the world, access to clean, safe sanitation isn’t a luxury – it’s a daily struggle. But we often take it for granted. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹. In many cases, toilets are broken, girls and boys are forced to share facilities, or there’s no toilet at all. This isn’t just inconvenient – it’s a barrier to education, health, and dignity. Many miss out on education altogether, either because they have to spend hours fetching water or because their schools don’t have basic sanitation. These aren’t just statistics – this is the reality for millions of children whose futures are at risk. As Luis Pupiales, Principal at a ChildFund-supported school in rural Ecuador, says, "𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲. 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵." Access to water and sanitation is more than a need; it’s a lifeline. While new toilets and handwashing stations are making a difference, the work is far from over. We need action. We need change. 𝗧𝗼𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝘂𝘅𝘂𝗿𝘆; 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. Every child deserves access to clean water and safe sanitation – for their health, their education, and their future. Let’s make it happen: https://lnkd.in/g-ETGgHU #WorldToiletDay

Poor sanitation and hygiene in schools can lead to serious consequences, including the spread of diseases, absenteeism, poor academic performance, and low self-esteem among students. These issues affect children’s overall health, well-being, and education, ultimately impacting their future prospects. However, access to proper water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in schools can transform lives and is a continual focus of the work we do. As part of our ongoing efforts to effect positive change in local communities, triple-P recently installed WASH infrastructure at Zimisele Primary School in Umlazi. This initiative has created a healthier and more supportive environment for both students and staff. Interviews conducted with the school’s principal and students revealed that the project has revitalized the school, restoring life and dignity. "The Triple-P team is thrilled with the positive outcomes and the significant impact this project has had. We extend our gratitude to all stakeholders for their support and collaboration and we look forward to implementing similar projects in other schools very soon.” Ntswaki Dithlale – triple-P director. South Africa- Minister halts school feeding scheme tender. This proposal would establish an exclusive supply relationship with a single competitor, in a market in which there is surely scope for more participation by SMMEs and/or Historically Disadvantaged Persons (without sacrificing efficiencies). If this proposed process does go ahead, challenges in terms of the Competition Act from existing rivals, and potential new entrants, seem likely https://lnkd.in/dvfVyu-p

2moInvolving the World Health Organization is brilliant. Nothing is more important than connecting non-profit organisations on topics that directly tie into the health and safety of our world's most vulnerable. Having been priviliged to work with the brilliant educators of RNLI and the development and aid experts at WHO, I can see the benefits of this type of cross-polination. And it makes my task as a visual communication expert that much more rewarding! 🙌
