The first 10 years of my career I was unemployed A LOT. The second 10 years, I’ve done a ton of career mentoring for others. Here’s a framework I invented to help you land hard-to-get jobs. I call it the Tarzan Career Framework 🌿: Think of switching jobs like you’re Tarzan swinging between trees. The more leverage you have, the easier it is to swing to hard-to-reach branches (hard-to-reach jobs). Here are 3 ways to create “Career leverage”: 1️⃣ It’s easier to swing down than swinging up. So target companies that admire your last employer. They’ll see you as being on a “higher branch,” giving you leverage. 🌱 2️⃣ When you’re near the bottom of the tree, it’s sometimes easier to climb out on a limb than climb up higher. Create leverage by specializing, it helps you stand out and shortens the distance you need to swing. 🎋 3️⃣ Optimize for swinging the shortest distance. Target companies or roles that are super-similar, and underscore those similarities in the interview process. One of my prospects was unexpectedly laid off yesterday. (Security is an illusion.) He wanted to work with me starting in January to find a new role. There are two scenarios:
In the first, you're fully prepared for such situations—your career strategy, resume, assets, network, interview skills, and social media presence are all in place. 
In the second, you had planned to work on it, but when the need arises, it feels like firefighting—chaotic, stressful, and leading to poor decisions. This often results in the situation where someone says, 'I took a step back in my career because I needed a job, and now I can’t explain it to recruiters.' My preferred approach is always prevention. These tips are great for anyone job searching in ANY industry, not just higher education. My favorite tip is to Upskill. There are lots of free/low-cost trainings and resources at your fingertips (ahem, LinkedIn Learning) to take advantage of!

Networking has become more pivotal for those who are navigating the job search market. Especially for transitioning service members who are for the first time competing to get hired. As Michael Quinn says repeatedly, networking allows you to get a foot in the door, the most important next step is the interview. More companies are turning back to the human connection to get good quality prospects due to the constant saturation that AI has brought to the job search market. Employers are inundated with resumes that for most emoloyers, is impossible to look at each one. Networking does not guarantee a job offer but it does give value to those who are referred which is not an opportunity not afforded to everyone, especially those who are looking for a career change. On the flip side, those who are referring others also have a reputation to protect.

It's important to remember that finding a job can be a challenging process. It's disheartening to see posts bashing recruiters and hiring managers instead of promoting opportunities. Let's focus on uplifting each other and promoting job openings. Regarding reposts, it's natural to want to share job opportunities with our networks. However, it's important to consider if reposts are actually helping or hurting our applications. Let's continue to support each other in our job searches and keep the conversation constructive.
