The very same structure to this line of thinking is built in to the Be Braver mindset from similar research. When we see Bravery or Courage in others. It’s often from our own vantage point. Not theirs. We see bravery in others but it’s a measure of our own. The risk, fears or uncertainties we predict are based upon our own read and assumptions in the same situation. I also talk about how a Be Braver mindset, when practiced within the framework, means you are going to find stretching out of comfort terrifyingly exciting. Because the physiology is the same. How you decide to read it changes how you experience it. I chose courage. Not I failed. I was brave. Not I was scared. #mindset #courage #performance

YOU GOT THIS! Simon Sinek would take this one step further - elite athletes have to get their heart rate up to be ready for peak performance - at the gate a ski racers heart rate is 120-180 beats per minute. I imagine that is no different for many athletes involved in "short burst" energy sports. This is a direct result of increased adrenaline and cortisol levels preparing the body for action. Only in this heightened state can reaction times and overall alertness be improved. In a recently circulating video, renowned U.S. gymnast Simone Biles is seen whispering "you got this" to herself before a routine. This moment perfectly encapsulates the power of words in modeling outcomes by shaping perception and interpretation of physical sensations. By reframing nervousness as excitement, athletes can transform potentially debilitating symptoms into empowering experiences, enhancing focus and performance. My son, who raced Division 1 skiing, once beautifully explained the concept of being "in the zone." He described how, during races, he didn’t hear the shouts or bells—nothing but his breathing and the sound of skis scraping the ice. As a parent, I learned to listen for the click of his boots hitting the gates in slalom to recognize his speed, rhythm, and timing long before seeing him appear down the slope. This intense focus and sense of being in the zone is the ultimate goal for athletes. The cognitive shift from nervousness to excitement, supported by positive self-talk and mental training, is key to achieving this optimal performance state. It allows athletes to channel their physical sensations into heightened awareness and automaticity, paving the way for peak performance. Journalists who interview Olympic athletes should ideally have athletic experience themselves to understand this delicate mental state. Questions like "were you nervous" can inadvertently shift the athlete's focus and may be counterproductive. Instead, understanding and acknowledging the mental strategies athletes use to stay focused can foster a more supportive and insightful dialogue, ultimately contributing to a healthier sports environment. #AthleteMindset #PowerOfWords #PerformancePsychology #EliteAthletes #InTheZone #PeakPerformance #MentalTraining #PositiveSelfTalk #SportsJournalism #AthleteFocus #SkiRacing #SimoneBiles #AdrenalineRush #CognitiveShift #SportsPerformance #HeartRate #AthleteExperience #SportsPsychology #OlympicAthletes #MentalStrategies
