Ever had a tool not quite do what you need? That was me yesterday with Cohere's new automatic prompt optimizer. I love optimizing my prompts, but their tool doesn't allow pasting text. Frustrating, right? Instead of complaining, I thought, "Why not build a solution?" 10 minutes later, I had a text-to-file downloader built entirely with AI assistance. Link to github and demo in comments. This tiny tool saves me a minute each day when optimizing prompts. In two weeks, I'll break even on time invested. But here's the kicker: I'm a developer, but Anthropic's Claude made saved me an hour, at the very least. As a developer, I wasn't lost at any point. But for non-developers, a site that can code, deploy, and SEO-optimize a tool like this is likely less than a month away. This experience got me thinking: 1. We're entering an era where solutions are minutes, not days, away. 2. The line between 'developer' and 'problem solver' is blurring. 3. Small, custom tools could revolutionize personal productivity. Question for the tech community: As AI democratizes software creation, how will this reshape our industry? Are we on the brink of a personal tool revolution, or is this just a blip? There are two ways AI can change how we build softwares. 💡 AI assisted code generation 🔹This is the only way right now 🔹We already have a number of code generation LLMs and IDE extensions to provide intellisense and snippet generation. 🔹 People are adopting this and experiencing productivity boost. 🔹 However, other than exploration, companies are still doing most of the work in old way. 🔹This mainly cuts the development time. But maintenance time can also be reduced by assisted refactoring. 💡 #PaC - Prompt as Code 🔹 Idea is to treat input prompts as source code stored in git. LLM will be used as a transpiler in CI/CD pipelines. 🔹Looks easier but devil is in the detail. 🔹Resist the temptation to refractor generated code. Modifying the prompt or using escape blocks will be the only option to ensure reproducibility. 🔹Must be adopted incrementally and at best, partially. For this LLM transpiler needs to support #define styled escape or prompt blocks. 🔹Recommended prompt conventions and pseudocode best practices will make it more reliable. I think second approach (Prompt as Code or whatever you call it) is a community effort not possible with just a single tool. I don't see it anything more than experiments in next three years but once the ecosystem matures, the shift might come dramatically, affecting not just development workforce but also the maintenance workforce which typically makes 80%-90% of the IT workforce.
