#upcoming #newepisode: Survival of the fittest in trucking. While enduring a prolonged freight recession, the largest trucking companies in North America have been subject to declining revenue and weaker profits. The financial strain caused by the freight downturn, which took hold in mid-2022 and has continued for two years into the first half of 2024, is plainly evident across the for-hire carrier landscape. What are the biggest pain points for carriers? And how are companies persevering in these challenging conditions? In next week's special RoadSigns Podcast, the makers of Transport Topics' updated Top 100 For-Hire Carriers list examine how the freight market slump has altered the competitive landscape in trucking. In the latest episode of Freight Nation: A Trucking Podcast, Lee Klaskow of Bloomberg Intelligence shares how weekly data on truck spot rates and MBI helps us gauge the pulse of the industry. 📊 Lee predicts contract rates might start to improve in the latter half of the year, potentially leading to low to mid-single digit rate increases. It's an optimistic outlook, but as Lee says, he's a "glass half full" kind of guy. Tune in via the links in the comments below 👇 #trucking #freightnation #BloombergIntelligence

This is an interesting question that came up on a podcast recently: Why can a broker have a virtual address and VOIP but a carrier cannot? And why do carriers get a freight guard when they do a bad job but brokers do not? It's a double standard that I'd like to explore. I want to be clear that I'm not here to bash either side. I'm just honestly asking why this double standard exists. In an ideal world, both brokers and carriers would have access to the best tools and resources to do their jobs. Let's work together to find a solution that benefits everyone involved. Unprecedented market conditions: Have we hit the bottom? In his 28 years at Kottke Trucking, Inc., General Manager Kyle Kottke has never encountered a market quite like this. Driving Forward podcast host Nate Johnson speculates that the market might have found its floor. “You're slowly seeing the spot and the contract come together and that, in every cycle I've been through, that's your turning point is them to get closer together. Your market stabilizes and you find your bottom.” Mentioned Kottke. In a FreightWaves article discussed on the show, Derek Weathers, CEO of Werner, acknowledges ongoing rate pressure during bid season. He also emphasizes the risks of shuffling carriers, suggesting a cautious approach amidst market uncertainties. What are your thoughts? I want to echo both Bill Robinson and Jeff Dickinson and say 2 things: 1: FMCSA needs to actually do something to enforce their own rules. Seriously. Like forever ago. Get your people on it, and stop being part of the problem. 2: These conversations need to be had face to face. I think way too many people try to get simple answers to complex issues over social media and that only seems to deepen the misunderstandings and fragmentation we see in our industry. That being said, the Broker Carrier Summit is the ONLY event designed and intended to facilitate these conversations between brokers and carriers. If you can join us in KC this April, you will see what we mean. #bcscrew #bcskc #brokercarriersummit #logistics #trucking

New Talking Transports episode just dropped with Adam Satterfield, Old Dominion Freight Line's CFO. In this Talking Transports podcast we discuss the outlook for #ltl markets and how the company is positioned to take on more demand when the #freight backdrop improves. The company’s industry-leading service levels — measured by low cargo claims and high on-time deliveries — has allowed it to drive rates higher. Tonnage growth should come at high incremental margin and could drive a sub-70 operating ratio over time. Click below to listen...enjoy!!!
