It's not a great picture, but Oakshot do hoarding! After clearing the site, we then secured it by installing hoarding on the perimeter. We can help with all aspects of the enablement/site setup phase. Imagine this: We get involved right at the first stage. We advise how and when to clear the site, negotiating around ecological and planning obstacles. Our BS5837 survey forms part of your planning app. Following planning we clear the site properly, and because we have been managing the vegetation as much as we could during the planning phase, there is no drama when we have to clear it fully. Habitat on site has been kept to a minimum, so no wasting thousands on ecology that could have been avoided. We secure the site, protect the trees, and go. You build houses. 🤑🤑 You have one contractor to deal with, and you save time and money because you have your ducks in a row from the beginning. 🦆🦆🦆 Operating all over the South East Give us a call - 📞02080870859 #enablement #ecology #environmental #arboriculture

Landscape Metrics : Landscape-Level Landscape-level metrics are about measurement of the overall structure of the entire landscape by integrating information across all classes and patches within it. - Landscape Diversity (Shannon's Diversity Index): Measures the diversity of various land cover types within the landscape. - Evenness Index: Indicates the even distribution of landscape elements. High evenness suggests that no single class predominates the landscape. - Interspersion and Juxtaposition Index: Measures the spatial mixing of different land cover types. It is useful for assessing habitat connectivity and landscape heterogeneity. - Aggregation Index: Quantifies the clustering or dispersion of patches of a specific class across the landscape. Higher values indicate greater clustering. These metrics are crucial for understanding ecological processes, evaluating habitat quality, and guiding conservation strategies. In 2007, we were commissioned to develop a 50-year masterplan for the future management of The Backs in Cambridge. Grounded in extensive historical research and arboricultural surveys, the plan focuses on enhancing the landscape’s visual structure while addressing both short and long-term tree management. Key elements of the project now include ecology and water management, ensuring sustainability is at the forefront. We monitor and update the masterplan on a regular basis as works are completed, under the overall stewardship of the Backs Committee. #landscape #landscapearchitecture #landscapearchitect

🏘️🌳House building and ecology!🌳🏘️ 🌪️In the whirlwind of the new government coming in, I've not seen any ecologists try and make sense of what this all means (if I'm wrong, point me in the right direction!)🌪️ 🏘️Labour have some big plans for growth, 1.5 million new homes over 5 years. This is alot but it's bold and that's what we need as a country, after confusion from the past government on development and cancelling flagship projects like HS2.🏘️ 🌳Obviously the green/grey/brown belt classification is the biggest battle environmentalists will have with developers. Brownfield sites generally make sense to develop due to their location close to existing infrastructure, but they can have some amazing ecology (having found some of the only pyramidal orchids in central Birmingham on a well known brownfield site, parts now designated as a SLINC).🌳 Greenfield/belt is often seen as the "Rural idyll" (Chris Ribchester taught me this many years ago!) but actually for ecology it can be a green desert of arable land. 📊I think the key to all this development is making sure the Local Nature Recovery Strategies are sound and robust. We need development but in the right place and then creating new habits not just to make up for what may be lost but for true nature recovery. Sadly, most LNRS will not be ready till 2025 due to feet dragging by the last government. The Labour Party need to turbocharge the funding for LNRS so that the right money can be spent in the right place to support this wide ranging planning and building reform. Without it, we risk missing the opportunity for joined up thinking. 📊 #ecology #LNRS #housebuilding #planning #BNG https://lnkd.in/eV59N8QW.

Landscape Metrics: For planning, management or research, we need certain quantitative indicators and measures that allow us to evaluate landscape ecosystems for comparison, analysis, etc. Classification allows for the quantification and analysis of landscapes and they typically include: 1.Patch metrics : Properties of individual ecological patches 2.Class metrics: Properties of all patches of a specific class 3.Landscape metrics : Provides a comprehensive overview of the landscape's structure 4.Connectivity metrics : Shows the degree to which the landscape facilitates ecological movement 5.Edge metrics : quantifies the interface between different land cover types, focusing on edge effects 6.Fragmentation metrics : Compares the degree of habitat fragmentation and its ecological implications Source: Gergel, S.E. and Turner, M.G. BIODIVERSITY NET GAIN & NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENTS (UK) This is (quite rightly?) becoming the most significant factor when landscaping new developments. Here are some notes by an ecology company to their client - an educational establishment in London. "1000sq metres (0.1 ha) of bramble scrub planting would satisfy both the low and medium distinctiveness trading rules and also meet the required 10% net gain. If the trees planted as part of Area B landscaping can be included, 13 small urban trees along with 100sq metres (0.01 ha) of bramble scrub planting would be the minimum needed to satisfy the trading rules and would provide 10% net gain." I am interested in what people think about the almost blanket requirement of using natives and in particular, the use of bramble in landscaping for new urban developments. #ecology #biodiversity #landscapearchitecture #plantingdesign #landscapedesign #BNG #nativeplants #wildplants #pollinators #wildlife #development
